Statesmen Win Back-To-Back GSC Titles With Win over Mississippi College

Cleveland, Miss. -- Delta State holds Mississippi College to only a first half field goal as the Statesmen keep the Heritage Bell Classic trophy and claim back-to-back Gulf South Conference championships for the first time since 2010-2011. The Green & White offense combined to out-gain MC 535-219 in total yardage.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both teams started slowly out of the gate with the only first quarter points coming off the foot of Nick Herber on a 22-yard field goal with 5:05 left in the first. 3-0 Delta State.
  • Kelvin Smith extended the DSU lead on their second drive of the second quarter as he finished the 5-play, 57-yard drive with a 15-yard scoring rush. 10-0 Delta State.
  • MC punted on the following drive as Delta State marched to the MC 4-yard line. Herber made another field goal from 21 yards out to end the drive. 13-0 Delta State.
  • The Choctaws burned four minutes off the clock before the end of the half and hit a field goal attempt to put themselves on the board with 35 seconds left in the half. Robbie Evans returned the ensuing kickoff 46 yards to the MC 48 and the Statesmen scored two plays later as Jaylen Green snagged Patrick Shegog's 17-yard touchdown pass with just 9 seconds left in the half. 20-3 Delta State at halftime.
  • Both teams punted again to start the second half, but Delta State found the endzone again on their next drive as Shegog scored from a yard out to end an 11-play, 83-yard drive. 27-3 Delta State.
  • DSU scored two drives later on a three-play drive in which Smith hit a 42-yard rush one play before Christian Malloy scored on a 10-yard run. 34-3 Delta State.
  • Todd Lee Battle dove to catch the final touchdown of the night in the fourth quarter to end a 5-play, 42-yard drive with 13:22 left in the game. Delta State's defense held serve the remainder of the way, highlighted by an interception by Jarius McFarland and a stand on fourth-and-goal on MC's final drive of the game. 41-3 Delta State final.
OFFENSIVE NOTABLES:
  • Patrick Shegog completed 22 of his 33 pass attempts for 220 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried the ball 9 times for 69 yards and a touchdown.
  • KJ Smith carried the ball 12 times for 119 yards and a score.
  • Christian Malloy recorded 12 rushes for 82 yards and a score.
  • Todd Lee battle caught 7 passes for 83 yards and a touchdown.
DEFENSIVE NOTABLES: SPECIAL TEAMS NOTABLES:
  • Nick Herber was 2-of-3 in his field goal attempts, hitting from 22 and 21 yards out. He also made all five of his PATs.
  • Parker Burleson punted 5 times for an average of 47.2 yards per attempt.
