Statesmen Power Past Union

Cleveland, Miss.The Delta State University Men's Basketball team took on the Union University Bulldogs for their second conference matchup of the season in just a three-day span. The Statesmen got the home crowd fired up early by surging out to an early 24-13 lead with 9:56 left in the first half after the successful three-point jumper from starting guard Chris Terrell. The Bulldogs battled back, cutting the deficit to 30-28 with 3:47 left in the half. The Statesmen spaced the lead back before the end of the high, highlighted by a made three-point basket by Caleb Allen at the buzzer to give the Statesmen a 39-32 lead heading into the locker rooms.  
 
Maalik Cartwright got the second half kicked off with a shot inside, picking it right back up where the Statesmen left off. The Statesmen extended their lead 53-41 after a 12-5 run that was catapulted by a long-range jumper from Kelen Dietrich. The Bulldogs showed their toughness by getting back to a single-digit contest 47-56 at the 10:54 mark in the half. The Statesmen quickly answered back, capturing a 14-point lead with 8:12 to go in the game. The combination of the Statesmen defense along with a 22-point outing from Maalik Cartwright helped paved the way for another conference victory. Delta State captured the home win versus Union University 86-66.
