Statesmen Score Ten Unanswered In Home-Opening Win

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State fell behind early to an unbeaten Missouri Southern team on Friday night, but the Statesmen used a combination of timely at-bats with clutch pitching and defense to score 10 unanswered runs in the first home win of the season. Five different Statesmen recorded extra-base hits with eight total DSU batters picking up at least one hit.
Head Coach Rodney Batts was once again pleased with his team's response to an early deficit. He also credited his guys for pulling together a complete team win. "I thought our energy and life was really good tonight, in particular after falling behind 4-1 early," said Batts. "We knew they were going to swing the bats well. Credit to our bullpen and credit to our guys for putting the barrel on the ball with men in scoring position."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions saw a lead-off hit erased in the top of the first with a 6-3 double play by Carson Clowers to Hayden Cooper. Clowers returned in the bottom of the inning with a lead-off double and later scored on a passed ball. 1-0 Delta State after 1.
  • Missouri Southern tied the game in the second with a lead-off home run by Henry Kusiak. Delta State went down in order in the bottom of the second. Tied 1-1 after 2.
  • MSSU had two on with two out in the top of the third. An error at third gave Kusiak his second RBI of the game. Will Doherty's double in the next at-bat scored two more Lions. 4-1 Missouri Southern Mid 3.
  • Rodney Hibler put himself in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the third after a single, stolen base, and an advance to third on a Clowers ground out. Brendan McCauley's RBI single scored Hibler. 4-2 MSSU after 3.
  • Nate Miezkowski and Garrett Rice picked up RBIs for the Lions in the top of the fourth inning, with Logan Cromer coming into the game in relief of Harrison Haley as well. Brett Burrell singled with one out in the bottom of the fourth and moved to third after an Eric Newsom double. A 2-RBI double by Taylor Woodcock scored the pair. 6-4 Lions after 4.
  • The Lions had Kusiak at third with one out in the top of the fifth inning, but a ground ball to third with a runner also at second put him in a bad spot, and he was eventually tagged out between third and home. A lineout to left ended the MSSU scoring threat. 6-4 Lions Mid 5.
  • The first six Statesmen batters reached safely in the bottom of the fifth with three walks, two hits, and a hit-by-pitch. Hayden Cooper got the first RBI of the inning on a bases-loaded single in the fourth plate appearance of the frame. Brett Burrell plated two more Statesmen on a double in the next at-bat. Taylor Woodcock hit into a double-play but still recorded an RBI as the bases were loaded with no outs. Delta State eventually loaded the bases before the second Carson Clowers walk of the inning scored the fifth run of the inning for DSU. Brendan McCauley hit a ground ball to the MSSU third baseman, but a throwing error allowed him to go to second as two more DSU runs scored. A fly-out ended the inning, but the Statesmen had regained the lead with a 7-spot. 11-6 Delta State after 5.
  • Both teams were fairly quiet in the 6th and 7th with only one base runner between the two teams in the innings. Missouri Southern went down in order for the third straight inning in the 8th. Kirkland Trahan hit a one-out single in the DSU 8th and reached second after a walk to Burrell. Newsom scored Trahan after Burrell's plate appearance with an RBI single to right. 12-6 Delta State after 8.
  • Trahan also recorded all three outs in the ninth for the Statesmen on fly balls to the right fielder. Delta State out-hit the Lions 12-10 in their home-opening win. 12-6 Delta State Final.
ON THE MOUND
  • Statesmen starter Harrison Haley faced 16 batters in 3.0 innings. He allowed five runs on seven hits.
  • Logan Cromer (W, 1-0) pitched 2.0 innings of relief after Haley. He gave up one run on two hits and the only two walks for the DSU staff.
  • Trace McNabb finished the game on the mound for the Statesmen. He pitched the final 4.0 innings, allowing no runs and only one hit with four strikeouts.
