Statesmen Bats Deliver In Win Over Eckerd College

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Delta State's bats were hot in Sunday's series finale against the Eckerd College Tritons. Delta State out-hit the Tritons 13-8, including two home runs for the Green and White.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kirkland Trahan started the scoring in the top of the first with a solo home run on a 3-2 count. Eckerd took the lead in their half of the first when a leadoff hit-by-pitch led to a 2-RBI home run. 2-1 Tritons after 1.
  • Delta State and Eckerd left two runners on base each in the second inning, with DSU picking up a hit by Brett Burrell. Delta State left a runner on in the third and fourth innings as well on hits by Carson Clowers and Burrell.
  • Brendan McCauley led the top of the fifth with a walk. He advanced to second on a ground out and third on a balk with two outs. Trahan scored McCauley on a single to right field to tie the game. The Tritons went down in order in the fifth. Tied 2-2 through 5.
  • Burrell's third hit of the game in the sixth inning eventually had him at second with two outs. Brett Cobb hit an RBI single that scored Burrell from second, giving the Statesmen the lead. Eckerd stranded the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning. 3-2 Delta State.
  • Another leadoff single put Carson Clowers on base to start the seventh inning. A single by Trahan moved him to third, and an Eric Newsom RBI fielder's choice would score him. Eckerd stranded another baserunner in the seventh. 4-2 Delta State after 7.
  • Hayden Cooper led the eighth with a leadoff single, but was out at second following a bunt by Matt Corder. Corder reached first safely and scored in the next at-bat on a two-run homer by Brett Cobb. The Statesmen held the Tritons in check with three strikeouts in the eighth and ninth innings to seal the win. 6-2 Delta State Final.
ON THE MOUND 
  • Starter Drake Fontenot picked up the win for DSU. He pitched 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts to two walks.
  • Logan Cromer pitched 1.0 innings and faced four batters. He recorded a strikeout and a walk.
  • Duke Jordan pitched 1.1 innings with a strikeout and a walk as well.
  • Steven Lacey pitched the ninth for the Statesmen, giving up one hit, but striking out two.
NOTABLES
  • Statesmen pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts to just four walks
  • Kirkland Trahan and Brett Burrell had three hits each for the Statesmen, including Trahan's second home run of the year.
