Statesmen Drop Conference-Opener Against Valdosta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State's bats kept up with Valdosta State's for most of Friday's game, but the timely hitting of the Blazers gave them the win in Delta State's conference home-opener. Friday also proved to be a great showing for both defenses with no errors recorded between the two teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Valdosta State went down in order in the top of the first. Carson Clowers led the bottom of the first with a DSU double and was stranded at third to end the frame. Scoreless after 1.
  • Three straight singles to lead the second inning created the first VSU run. An RBI on a ground out and an RBI two-out double plated runs two and three for the Blazers. Delta State went down in order in the bottom half of the second. 3-0 VSU after 2.
  • VSU batter Nick Gonzalez came around to score in the third after reaching on via HBP to lead off the inning. Clowers got his second hit of the game in the bottom of the third. 4-0 VSU after 3.
  • The Blazers hit into an inning-ending double play in the fourth inning, and Delta State stranded Kirkland Trahan on base after a leadoff walk. Three VSU hits in the top of the fifth led to run number five for the Blazers. DSU's Jonathan Dewberry led the bottom of the fifth with a single and came around to score after a single by Brett Cobb and a sacrifice fly by Clowers. 5-1 VSU after 5.
  • A 2-RBI double with two outs gave VSU their sixth and seventh runs of the game in the top of the sixth. Hayden Cooper walked to start the bottom of the sixth and scored after a single by Matt Corder moved him to third and a sacrifice fly by Dewberry scored him. 7-2 VSU after 6.
  • Delta State kept the Blazers off the bases in the remaining innings, thanks in part to a stellar relief appearance by Logan Cromer. Cromer pitched the last 2.2 innings and retired all seven batters he faced, six of which came on strikeouts. Delta State stranded their only two base runners in the final innings. 7-2 VSU Final.
ON THE MOUND 
  • Starter Hammer Franks (0-1) pitched 5.0 innings. He gave up 5 runs on 8 hits with 1 strikeout and 1 walk.
  • Duke Jordan relieved Franks in the sixth inning and pitched 1.1 innings. He allowed 2 runs on 1 hit with 3 walks allowed.
  • Logan Cromer pitched the final 2.2 innings for DSU. He retired all 7 batters he faced, 6 of which were strikeout victims.
