Statesmen Baseball Wins Back and Forth Game at West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. –  Tuesday night's midweek trip to West Alabama tested the Statesmen's ability to overcome adversity only three games into the season. The two teams traded runs for the majority of the night, but Delta State capitalized on six Tiger errors to claim the win.
Head Coach Rodney Batts said he was most pleased with his team's resiliency and their ability to win games in a variety of ways. "I was proud of our guys and the way they bounced back after Sunday," said Batts. "We're still trying to figure out our offense. We're going to play small ball at times, we're going to have to hit at times; I'm proud of them for getting it done tonight."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Statesmen second baseman and two-hole hitter Brendan McCauley drew a walk with one out and advanced to third on a throwing error while attempting to steal second base. He scored from third a few pitches later on a sacrifice fly to the centerfield warning track by Kirkland Trahan. Drake Fontenot strikes out two Tigers in the bottom half of the inning. 1-0 Delta State after 1.
  • Delta State strands two runners in the second after a Brett Burrell walk and a Taylor Woodcock single. The Tigers went down in order as Fontenot struck out another UWA batter and drew a 1-6-3 to end the inning. 1-0 Delta State after 2.
  • Delta State went down in order in their half of the third. The Tigers stranded a runner in the third as Fontenot recorded his fourth strikeout of the game. 1-0 Delta State after 3.
  • Matt Corder drew a walk with one out in the fourth. A successful steal attempt of second base put him in scoring position for Brett Burrell, who doubled him in for the second DSU run of the game. Burrell advanced to third on a wild pitch and Connar Gardner drew a walk to put runners at the corners. Taylor Woodcock put a bunt down that scored Burrell from third, moved Gardner to second, and allowed Woodcock to reach first safely. Delta State would leave them on base. 3-0 Delta State Mid 4.
  • West Alabama matched DSU's fourth inning effort with 2 runs of their own on four hits. Trace McNabb got the nod to relieve Fontenot with two outs. McNabb struck out UWA leadoff hitter Colden Peeples to end the inning with the bases loaded. 3-2 Delta State after 4.
  • Hayden Cooper hit a ground ball to the UWA third baseman with McCauley and Trahan standing at third and first respectively to start the fifth inning. McCauley scored on a dropped throw to the catcher as Trahan and Cooper each advanced a base on the play. They both moved into scoring position just in time for Burrell to knock a 2-RBI double down the third base line. 6-2 Delta State Mid 5.
  • West Alabama matched the Statesmen again in the fifth. Josh Bower recorded an RBI sac fly to center for the second out of the inning. It would also move a runner to third who would later score on a wild pitch. John Mitchell ended the scoring in the inning with a solo home run. Duke Jordan came in for the Statesmen to relieve McNabb. He struck out the only batter he faced in the inning. 6-5 Statesmen after 5.
  • The scoring resumed in the 8th inning with Carson Clowers reaching first safely on a bunt to lead it off. McCauley also put a bunt down in the next at-bat, but UWA pitcher Gates Pee couldn't make a throw to first because no one was covering the bag. The Tiger defense collapsing on the play also meant that no one was covering third, so Clowers went all the way from first to third on the bunt. An errant throw from Pee to third allowed Clowers to score on the error and McCauley to take the extra base at second. Josh Hill entered in the eighth inning and held the Tigers in check with two strikeouts. 7-5 Delta State after 8.
  • Delta State went down in order in the ninth inning. Two more Hill strikeouts and a ground ball to Burrell would seal the 7-5 Statesmen win.
ON THE MOUND
  • Delta State starter Drake Fontenot pitched 3.2 innings with four strikeouts while only allowing two earned runs on seven hits and no walks.
  • West Alabama starter Bryan Quimby (0-1) pitched 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on two hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
  • Trace McNabb relieved Fontenot and pitched 1.0 inning, allowing three runs on three hits with one strikeout.
  • Duke Jordan (1-0) recorded the win for Delta State. He pitched 2.1 scoreless innings with one hit allowed and four strikeouts to only one walk.
  • Josh Hill pitched the final two innings while also not allowing any runs. Hill only gave up two hits and struck out four Tiger batters with no walks.
