MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Statesmen pick up their first series sweep of the season as they once again woke the bats up in the middle innings of their game two win. A lightning delay slowed things in game three, but the Statesmen still held on for the win before darkness halted play.
"I was proud of our guys the whole weekend," said Head Coach
Rodney Batts. "They sat on a bus for over an hour, came right back and scored a run within four pitches. That's a testament to this team; the fire and grit that they've got."

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME 1
- Both teams used the minimum number of batters for the first two innings, except for a solo home run by Christian Brothers' Dalton Pyzer with one out in the second. 1-0 CBU after 2.
- The third inning was quiet as well for the two teams. Carson Clowers led the fourth inning with a double and reached third on a throwing error on the same play. Brendan McCauley reached base safely on a bad throw by the Bucs' third baseman after keeping Clowers at third. Two batters later, Eric Newsom scored both of them on his first home run over the year over the massive centerfield wall. CBU fell in order in their half of the fourth. 3-1 Delta State after 4.
- Rodney Hibler kept the momentum going in the fifth with a leadoff single, but was later caught in a pickle between second and third after a fielder's choice. Matthew Nichols made it all the way to second on the same play. Nichols reached third safely after Clowers reached safely on a bunt where a bad throw also let him advance to second. Nichols was safe at home plate in the next AB in which McCauley also reached safely on a fielder's choice. Clowers then scored on an RBI single by Kirkland Trahan. Newsom was given an intentional walk to load the bases with one out. A walk to Taylor Woodcock plated the sixth DSU run. Runs seven and eight came in the next AB thanks to a 2-RBI single by Jonathan Dewberry. 8-1 Statesmen after 5.
- Delta State added one more run in the sixth after Nichols scored on an RBI sac fly by Trahan after leading off the inning with a single. CBU loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but could only plate one run and hit into a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning. Delta State's defense stranded three CBU runners in the final three innings. 9-2 Delta State Final.
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME 2
- Clowers reached on a throwing error to start game one. He then stole second and third in time for a McCauley groundout to score him with one out. Trahan and Newsom then drew back-to-back walks and a wild pitch moved them into scoring position. Burrell then plated Trahan on an RBI single with runners now at the corners. Dewberry hit into a fielder's choice that would retire himself at first while scoring Newsom from third. Woodcock also drew a walk, but was left on base along with Burrell. CBU stranded two in the first. 3-0 Delta State after 1.
- Delta State added two more in the second inning on RBIs by Trahan and Newsom that scored Nichols and McCauley. A 2-RBI double and a 2-RBI single got the Bucs within a run in the bottom of the second. A lightning delay between the second and third innings then put the game on hold for just over an hour. 5-4 Delta State after 2.
- Woodcock put the second pitch after the delay into left field to get the third inning started. He scored on an RBI single from Clowers. Nichols, who was walked earlier, also came around to score on another RBI-sac groundout by Trahan. The Bucs had a baserunner, but hit into a 6-4-3 double play in the bottom half of the third. 7-4 Delta State after 3.
- Delta State stranded a runner in the top of the fourth. Two more CBU runs were plated on three hits in the bottom of the fourth to once again make it a one-run game. 7-6 Delta State after 4.
- Delta State stranded a runner in the fifth while also retiring the Bucs in order. Both teams and the umpires were having trouble visually picking up the ball in the fifth as Nadicksbernd Field does not have any lights. The required amount of inning to constitute a complete game had been played, so the umpires and coaches agreed to call the game. 7-6 Delta State Final.
