CLEVELAND, Miss. – Momentum was on West Alabama's side early on in Delta State's Monday nonconference loss. Delta State outhit the Tigers 10-7, but UWA made the most of their extra chances early enough to score three in the first in their 7-3 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The first four UWA batters reached base safely with two hit-by-pitches, a fielder's choice, and a bases-loaded walk to plate the first run. A one-out RBI single moved everyone up 90 feet, followed by another bases-loaded walk for the third Tiger run of the inning. Cade Whitley then replaced the starter, Duke Jordan, and recorded the final two outs on flyouts. Carson Clowers led the DSU first inning with a single and then stole second and third. Clowers was called out in a pickle between third and home after a fielder's choice by Brendan McCauley, but McCauley used the confusion to advance all the way to third on the play. McCauley then scored on an RBI single by Kirkland Trahan. 3-1 West Alabama after 1.
• Another leadoff HBP came around to score for the Tigers in the second inning. The Tigers and Statesmen each stranded a runner in the second. 4-1 West Alabama after 2.
• The Tigers fell in order in the third and fourth innings while the Statesmen picked up three hits, but no runs during that time. A leadoff single in the fifth for UWA came around to score with one out. Clowers led the DSU fifth with a walk and two more stolen bags to put him at third with one out. A Trahan RBI single plated Clowers for the second DSU run. Trahan advanced to third on a single by Eric Newsom, and Trahan scored on a fielder's choice by Brett Burrell. 5-3 West Alabama after 5.
• West Alabama plated their sixth run in the sixth on a one-out RBI double. Run number seven came in the eighth as Delta State stranded five runners in the final innings. 7-3 West Alabama Final.

ON THE MOUND

• Starter Duke Jordan allowed three runs on one hit with a strikeout but walked two and hit two batters.
• Cade Whitley pitched 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with a strikeout.
• Trace McNabb pitched 3.0 innings, giving up two runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
• Logan Cromer pitched 1.0 inning, allowing no runs on one hit with one strikeout.

UP NEXT
Delta State returns to action tomorrow (Tues 3-14) at Arkansas-Monticello for a 3:00 pm nonconference tilt. They return to GSC play this weekend with a three-game homestand against Union, beginning Friday 3/17.
