PENSACOLA, Fla. – Statesmen baseball splits Saturday's doubleheader against the Argonauts, dropping their second series of GSC play. Game two on Saturday saw the Statesmen answer with a home run by Brett Burrell and a nine-strikeout performance by Drake Fontenot on the hill.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE

• Both teams went in order in the first inning. Brett Burrell picked up the first hit of the game in the second but was eventually left at third after two fielder's choices. A one-out single and a two-out passed ball put Zack Stokes at second, where he scored on an RBI single by Mike Scordo. 1-0 West Florida after 2.
• The teams combined to leave 7 runners on base between the third and sixth innings. The Argonauts extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh on a one-out, two-RBI single by Preston Moore. 3-0 Argonauts after 7.
• Brett Burrell reached on a fielder's choice with two away in the ninth. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Taylor Woodcock. A flyout in the next at-bat would end the game and give the series win to the Argonauts. 3-1 West Florida Final.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO

• Game two started slowly with only one hit between the teams in the first three innings. Brendan McCauley hit a one-out single in the fourth and moved to second on a Kirkland Trahan single. A single by Eric Newsom scored McCauley from second and moved Trahan to third with one away. Everybody came around to score two pitches later on Brett Burrell's three-run homer over the left-field fence. UWF had two outs to start the bottom of the fourth, but answered with a two-run home run by Tyler Dowdy. 4-2 Delta State after 4.
• The Argonauts stranded four more runners in the final innings, including two in the seventh trailing by two. Josh Hill forced a groundout to third with two on to end the threat and give DSU another GSC win. 4-2 Delta State Final.

ON THE MOUND

• Game one starter Hammer Franks (0-2) pitched only 1.1 innings. He allowed a run and a hit with two strikeouts.
• Cade Hodges pitched 3.2 innings in game one. He allowed no runs on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
• Jesse Homan pitched the next 1.1 innings of game one. He allowed two runs (both earned) on hits.
• Trace McNabb pitched the final 1.2 innings of game one. He gave up only one hit and one walk.
• Game two starter Drake Fontenot (2-0) pitched 6.2 of the game's 7 innings. He allowed only two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts to only two walks.
• Josh Hill pitched the final 0.1 inning of game two. He faced two batters.

UP NEXT
Delta State returns to Cleveland this Tuesday (3/7) for a midweek game against Henderson State beginning at 5:00 pm. They resume GSC play next Friday as they begin a three-game series against Christian Brothers in Memphis, Tennessee.
