HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams hit into double plays in the first inning as DSU's Brendan McCauley, Carson Clowers, and Brett Burrell rolled a 4-6-3 DP for outs one and two. McCauley and Burrell also picked up the first two DSU hits of the game in the first and second innings, respectively. HSU stranded a two-out double in the third and the Statesmen went in order in their half-inning. Tied 0-0 after 3.
  • The Reddies stranded a two-out walk in the top of the fourth. McCauley led the bottom of the fourth with a single and advanced to second on a Kirkland Trahan groundout. Eric Newsom was hit by a pitch in the following at-bat, putting runners at first and second. Burrell doubled in the next at-bat to score McCauley from second and move Newsom to third. Taylor Woodcock then hit into a fielder's choice, but scored Newsom and moved Burrell to third. Jonathan Dewberry drew a walk in the next plate appearance. Rodney Hibler's RBI single scored Burrell and moved Dewberry to third. Matthew Nichols scored Dewberry from third, and Hibler was called out trying to score on a wild pitch. 4-0 Delta State after 4.
  • A leadoff walk came around to score for the Reddies in the top of the fifth with the RBI going to Luke Farrar with two outs. Delta State stranded two in the bottom half of the inning. 4-1 Delta State after 5.
  • HSU stranded two runners in the top of the sixth. Hibler extended the Statesmen lead with a no-doubt solo home run to left in the bottom of the sixth. 5-1 Delta State after six.
  • Delta State's defense stranded three Reddie runners between the seventh and eighth innings. Josh Hill shut the door on HSU in the ninth, striking out two of the three batters he faced. 5-1 Delta State Final.
