HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Statesmen left one on in the first after Carson Clowers drew a walk and then stole second. Lane fell in order in their half of the first. Brett Cobb hit a one-out single to left in the second and came home on Matthew Nichols' two-run homer. Rodney Hibler doubled with two away and scored on an RBI single by Jonathan Dewberry. Clowers reached on a bunt that moved Dewberry to third, who scored the final run of the inning after a balk. Lane picked up a hit and stranded two in the second. 4-0 Delta State after 2.
  • Eric Newsom hit a one-out single in the third and moved to second after a single by Cobb. Peyton Badon drew a walk to load the bases with two outs just before Hibler was hit by a pitch to bring in Newsom. Lane drew two walks, but left both in the bottom of the third. 5-0 Delta State after 3.
  • Both teams sent only three to the plate in the fourth and fifth innings. Badon drew a walk to start the sixth. He also stole second and moved to third on a throwing error with no outs. Dewberry hit a ground out to the first baseman for the second out but was successful in plating Badon. Lane fell in order again in the bottom half of the sixth. 6-0 Delta State after 6.
  • Hayden Cooper hit a one-out solo home run in the seventh, but the Statesmen also left the bases loaded in the inning. A one-out triple later scored for the Dragons in the bottom of the seventh. 7-1 Delta State after 7.
  • The first four Statesmen batters all reached base safely in the eighth with a double by Dewberry, an RBI double by Clowers, an RBI single by Kirkland Trahan, and a walk drawn by Cooper. Lane hit into a double play, but still scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth. 9-3 Delta State after 8.
  • Badon and Dewberry both singled as the Statesmen left the bases loaded in the ninth. Lane stranded their only runner of the ninth as Delta State picked up the midweek win. 9-3 Delta State Final.
