HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jonathan Dewberry drew a full count walk then advanced to third after a sac bunt and a sac fly. Hayden Cooper drew a walk just before Eric Newsom put the Statesmen on the board with an RBI single up the middle to score Dewberry. West Georgia had a base runner in the first after a single, but catcher Brett Cobb caught the runner on a steal attempt to second. 1-0 Delta State after 1.
- Carson Clowers drew a leadoff walk in the top of the second. Clowers stole second base and advanced to third when the throwdown squeaked into centerfield, but West Georgia seemed to be in no hurry, so Clowers took home plate as well. The Wolves picked up another base runner, but stranded him in the bottom of the second. 2-0 Delta State after 2.
- Both teams sent just three to the plate in the third inning. Newsom and Clowers singled as DSU left two on base in the top of the fourth. UWG loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, but ultimately left them stranded. Dewberry found an infield single on a bunt and Kirkland Trahan drew a walk, but both were left in scoring position in the DSU as UWG fell in order in the fifth inning. 2-0 Delta State after 5.
- Clowers doubled to left to lead the DSU sixth but was eventually stranded at third. A West Georgia solo home run plated their first run in the bottom half of the sixth as they also stranded a runner. 2-1 Delta State after 6.
- Brendan McCauley was left on base after a walk in the top of the seventh. The Wolves fell again in order in the bottom of the seventh. Newsom singled to lead the DSU half of the eighth and was replaced by Brett Burrell as a pinch runner. A groundout moved Burrell to second just before an intentional walk to Clowers. Taylor Woodcock was called to pinch hit with two away in the inning. He sent an 0-2 pitch back up the middle to score Burrell from second as he and Clowers moved into scoring position. UWG left a runner on in the bottom of the eighth. 3-1 Delta State after 8.
- Brendan McCauley singled to right center to start the ninth and later stole second but was stranded there. The Wolves picked up a base runner after a two-out hit, but Steven Lacey was able to draw a backward K out of the final batter to end the game. 3-1 Delta State final.
