Statesmen Run Away from Boll Weevils 79-63

CLEVELAND, Miss.- The Delta State University men's basketball team (4-2, 0-0 GSC) forced 31 turnovers in their 79-63 victory over the Boll Weevils from the University of Arkansas Monticello (3-3, 0-0 GAC) Tuesday night at the Walter Sillers Coliseum.

Delta State's full court pressure really got to the Boll Weevils as senior guard Chris Terrell had a Statesmen career high eight steals to add on to his 26 points shooting 3-5 from beyond the arch.

DSU and UAM would exchange leads for eight times in the first half as Delta State would have the biggest lead at 12-7 after a Keithean Brooks three ball with15:01 remaining. Brooks would score 25 points in the winning effort.

The Statesmen and the Weevils would go back-and-forth for the final 15 minutes before Kolby Horace would get a steal and throw down a dunk giving the Statesmen a 33-31 lead into the break. Horace would have a career high six steals, pressuring Arkansas Monticello.

Delta State would pull head to their biggest lead of six at the time early in the second half as the backcourt would continue to wreak havoc pressuring the Weevil guards. Layups from Terrell, Brooks and Horace would push the green and white to a 39-33 lead.

DSU would pull ahead to double digits for the first time at the 10-minute mark in the second half and would keep their lead around 10 points before a Terrell 6-0 run in 28 seconds would make it 64-50 forcing UAM to call a timeout.

With just over a minute to play the Statesmen pressure would start to pay dividends on the Boll Weevil offense as they would extend their lead to 21 points with a Decorian Payton layup to make it 77-56.

On the next offensive possession, Payton would find freshman Brendan Braddix for a layup to score the final two points on the night making it 79-58.

With the 79-63-win, Delta State will improve to 4-2 going into Gulf South Conference Play as they will hit the road next Thursday, Dec. 5, as they travel to Jackson, Tenn., to take on the Bulldogs from Union University.
