Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Delta State Athletics

Quick Start Boosts Statesmen to 87-73 Season Opening Victory

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Delta State University men's basketball team started off the game on a 13-0 run and never looked back in their 87-73 victory over the hosting Magicians from LeMoyne-Owen College Friday night at Bruce Hall/Johnson Gymnasium.

The Statesmen started off the game on a 13-0 run including Kolby Horace scoring nine of the 13 points in the early run. Horace led all Statesmen scoring his Statesmen career high of 27 points shooting 5-7 from beyond the arch.

The Statesmen full court pressure was a big factor of the game, forcing the Magicians to play too fast and turn over the ball 25 times.

Horace was one of two Statesmen who scored 20+ points in the victory as preseason all-GSC guard Keithean Brooks added 23 points shooting 8-15 from the field.

After the 13-0 run the Statesmen finished the hot start with a 25-8 run in the first 11 minutes of the game.

The Magicians would get it as close as nine in the first half, but Chris Terrell would close the half out with seven of the Statesmen's final 12 points in three minutes. Terrell would finish the game with 16 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. The Statesmen knocked down seven three balls in the first half as they took a 42-29 lead into the half.

The Statesmen would keep their lead around 10 until the halfway point in the second half where the Magicians would creep back into the game making it 63-60 with 7:12 left in regulation.

The Statesmen quadruple of Horace, Brooks, Jesse Washington and Terrell would take over in the final 7:12 scoring 20 of the final 24 points to pull away and take an 87-73 victory.

The Statesmen took care of the ball only turning over the ball eight times in 40 minutes of play.

The Statesmen and Magicians come back to Walter Sillers Coliseum this Sunday, Nov. 10 as they continue the GSC/SIAC Crossover. Sunday's game will tip off at 3:00 p.m. (CDT).
