CLINTON, Miss. – The Delta State University Women's Basketball team (1-0, 0-0 GSC) outscored the Dragons from Lane College 19-5 in the third quarter en route to their 68-63 season opening victory Friday afternoon at A.E. Wood Coliseum at Mississippi College.
Freshman Guard
Daniela Gintere led the Lady Statesmen as she was the only player to reach double digits scoring 10 points.
Grace Watson, battling foul trouble, pulled down a team high 10 rebounds on the afternoon. Nine Lady Statesmen managed to score five or more points in the contest including 33 points from the bench.
Martyna Czescik attacked the offensive glass on the afternoon pulling down five offensive rebounds to add to her six points
Freshman Guard
Brilynn Findley along with Stergaki would lead the Lady Statesmen defensively with three steals each.
The Lady Statesmen battled pressure all afternoon from the Dragons as
Olivia Allen started the game with her own 5-0 run. Allen started the quarter, while
Rafalia Stergaki finished the quarter with back-to-back layups, cutting the early Dragon lead to 14-12 after one quarter of play.
In the second quarter, the Lady Statesmen trailed, but managed to keep the game within one possession.
Wakiryah Daniels would tally in four points to add to her nine total points on the afternoon. The Dragons took a 25-24 lead into the break.
Coming out of the break, The Lady Statesmen would explode on a 17-1 for 9:13 of the third quarter with included the Lady Statesmen forcing six turnovers, as Delta State made it difficult for the Dragons as Lane shot 2-15 from the field in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Statesmen managed to attack the Dragons as they ended up getting to the free throw line 11 times in the fourth quarter. The Lady Statesmen would also score 22 points in the paint for the second half.
The Lady Statesmen will come back to Walter Sillers Coliseum tomorrow for the GSC/SIAC Crossover as they host the Lady Magicians from LeMoyne-Owen College at 6:30 p.m. (CDT).
