CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University men's basketball team (5-3, 1-1 GSC) will play in Walter Sillers Coliseum for the last time in 2024 this Thursday and Saturday as the will host the Falcons from the University of Montevallo and the Warhawks from Auburn University at Montgomery.
Thursday's contest will tip off at approximately 7:30 p.m., (CDT). Before Saturday's contest, Dr. Muse and the family of William Box will be recognized on the Lloyd Clark Court of Sillers Coliseum for their dedication of the Box-Muse Basketball Team Room in Sillers Coliseum.
Scouting the Statesmen
- Delta State enters this weekend with a 5-3 overall record and a 1-1 Gulf South Conference record. Last weekend, the Statesmen split their weekend with an 83-68 loss to Union but followed it up with an 86-75 win against Christian Brothers.
- The Statesmen enter this weekend ranked number one in the nation in turnover margin with 11.1. Senior guard Chris Terrell leads the GSC as he averages 3.9 steals per games. The Statesmen force a GSC best 21.4 turnovers per game.
- The Statesmen have two top-ten scorers in the GSC in Terrell and Keithean Brooks. Terrell leads the Green and White as he averages 18.9 points per game while Brooks averages 18.6 points per game.
Scouting the Falcons
- Montevallo enters this weekend with a 6-2 overall record and an unblemished 2-0 Gulf South Conference record after sweeping Trevecca Nazarene and Lee last weekend in Montevallo. The Falcons started their weekend beating Lee 75-60 and followed up with an 89-71 win over Trevecca. The Falcons enter this Thursday as the second best three-point shooting team as they shoot 36% from beyond the arch.
- The Falcons are led by GSC Player of the Week Brandon Fussell. Fussell won his second GSC Player of the Week award this season after compiling averages of 30.5 points, 2.5 steals, two assists, and 2.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week for Montevallo. To start, the sophomore was lights out offensively against Lee where he recorded 33 points on 73 percent shooting, including being five-of-seven from beyond the arc, and dished out two assists in a 75-60 win over Lee. He also had three steals and pulled down two boards. Then, in Montevallo's 89-71 win over Trevecca Nazarene, Fussell had another efficient offensive showing where he dropped 28 points on 53 percent shooting and made 40 percent of his three-point attempts
- The Falcons also have the GSC Freshman of the Week in redshirt freshman guard Camden Andrews. Andrews averaged 14.5 points, 6.5 rebounds 2.5 assists and one steal in their two games last week against Trevecca Nazarene and Lee.
Scouting the Warhawks
- Auburn Montgomery Enters this weekend with a 4-3 overall record and a 1-1 conference record after splitting their two games last weekend in Montgomery against Trevecca Nazarene and Lee. The Warhawks fell to Trevecca 69-68 Thursday night. The Warhawks followed up with a 74-66 win against Lee last Saturday.
- The Warhawks are led in the frontcourt by grad-transfer Malachi Rhodes. The McDonough, Ga., native leads all AUM scorers as he averages 15.4 points per game so far this season. Rhodes is the fourth best rebounder in the conference as he pulls down an average 8.1 rebounds per game.
- Last Weekend, Rhodes averaged 19.5 points per game and pulled down an average of 8 rebounds per game. Rhodes had his season best 22 points and 13 rebounds in the one-point loss against Trevecca Nazarene.
