CLEVELAND, Miss. – Senior point guard
Chris Terrell posted a new career-high 42 points as the Delta State University Men's Basketball team (6-4, 2-2 GSC) defeated the Warhawks from Auburn University at Montgomery (4-4, 1-2 GSC) 92-80 Saturday afternoon on Lloyd Clark Court in Walter Sillers Coliseum.
Terrell shot 12-22 from the field and had six steals as Delta State knocked down 17 shots from beyond the arch becoming the first Statesmen to score above 40 points since Malik Cartwright did it against Christian Brothers in the 2022-23 season.
The Statesmen and Warhawks battled until Delta State took an 8-0 run to make it 15-7 on three balls from
Sam Whitmer and
Jesse Washington before the first media timeout in the first half.
Delta State would add another 6-1 run to get a 21-8 lead as
Je'Marion Westbrook and
Bryce Clayton would add two three pointers to continue the hot shooting as Delta State shot 9-20 from beyond the arch in the first half.
Auburn Montgomery would bring the Statesmen lead to three with just under three minutes to go in the first half before Delta State would close the half on a 7-0 run to take a 43-33 lead at the break.
Coming out of the half, Auburn Montgomery would tie the game up on a 10-0 run to start but the Statesmen did not panic.
Terrell would end the run with a three pointer to re-gain the lead for Delta State as they would never trail the rest of the game.
A 12-1 run ignited by the Statesmen pressure would help Delta State get their lead back to double-digits as the bench would continue to get contribution from Clayton and Westbrook.
AUM would not go away as they would bring the game back to a four-point game with under ten minutes to go but the Statesmen would answer every Warhawk run with a run of their own.
Terrell would help keep the Statesmen lead around double-digits as Delta State would finish with a 92-80 win.
The Statesmen will hit the road for their final two games before the holiday break when they head to Livingston and Huntsville to take on the Tigers of the University of West Alabama and the Chargers from the University of Alabama at Huntsville.
