MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Delta State University women's basketball team (5-3, 1-1 GSC) never trailed in their 57-51 win over Christian Brothers University (0-8, 0-2 GSC) Saturday afternoon in Canale Arena in Memphis.
Two
Grace Watson field goals in the paint and a
Madi Kate Vuncannon three ball pushed the Green and white out to a 7-2 run to start the game. Watson led all scorers with 13 points as she went 5-6 from the charity stripe. Vuncannon knocked down two early three balls to score her six points and space out the Delta State offense
The Lady Statesmen would get early production from the front court as
Dakiya Toney and
Martyna Czescik would score 10 of the last 12 points for the Green and White as they ended the first quarter up 22-16. Toney led all Lady Statesmen with eight rebounds along with scoring seven on the afternoon.
A five-point second quarter from senior guard
MaKenzie Hill would keep the Green and White in front 34-29 at the half. Hill was the second highest scorer for Delta State as she scored 11 points, going a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line.
In the third quarter,
Wakiryah Daniels added on to the scoring production as she would hit a three and get a layup on an offensive rebound to help keep Delta State ahead 49-41 at the end of the third quarter. Daniels was the third Lady Statesmen in double digits as she added 10 points and had two steals.
CBU would bring it back to a one point lead early on in the fourth quarter, but the defensive effort from Delta State would close the door on the Lady Bucs as they didn't allow a point in six minutes in the final frame as Hill would score six points in the final frame to help keep the Lady Statesmen ahead for their first conference win of the 2024-2025 season 57-51.
The Lady Statesmen will return to Walter Sillers Coliseum this Thursday, Dec. 12 to host the Falcons from the University of Montevallo. Tip-off for Thursday afternoon will be at 5:30 p.m. (CDT).
