MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Statesmen held the fifth seed in the GSC going into Thursday's game at Montevallo. The Green & White knew they would be getting the Falcons' best shot with UM a game out of the conference tournament in the nine-seed.
Neither team led by more than five in the first half as Delta State took a 21-16 lead with 10:50 remaining in the first half. The Falcons would tie the game six times in the first half, but there was always a DSU answer to regain the lead on the other end, including three-pointers by
Chris Terrell,
Kolby Horace, and
Kelen Dietrich to break those ties.
Chris Terrell also led all scorers with 15 points in the first half and was the only player at the break in double-figures.
Delta State hopped out to a six-point lead less than three minutes into the second half, but the Falcons once again cut the lead to two by the first media timeout. Montevallo went on a run to take a 51-45 lead with 12:51 remaining, but the Statesmen used a
Keithean Brooks three-pointer and Terrell jumper to cut the lead to one at 51-50 by the second media timeout.
KB made another shot out of the timeout to regain the lead, but a Montevallo three traded the lead back to the Falcons. The teams continued to trade buckets and the lead until KB made a lay-up with three minutes left to put DSU up by three at 73-71.
Montevallo made two free throws and a lay-up after a stop to take a 74-73 lead with just over a minute left. Horace made a free throw to tie the game, but a Montevallo bucket gave them the lead once more at 76-74 with just 34 seconds left.
The Falcons made a free throw with 7 seconds left to go up 77-74. Montevallo fouled with four seconds left with the Statesmen down three points to give them a one-and-one opportunity. The first free throw was missed and rebounded by the Falcons to give them the win.
Chris Terrell led all scorers with 20 points, including 4 three-point makes, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. KB Brooks scored 16 points to go with 6 rebounds and 2 steals.
Kolby Horace finished with 12 points and 3 rebounds.
Maalik Cartwright also finished in double-digits with 10 points to go with 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.
