Statesmen Run-Rule Badgers for First Series Win of 2024

MOBILE, Ala. – Delta State Baseball wins the series with Spring Hill in run-rule fashion. The Statesmen out-hit the Badgers 21-4 in the seven-inning win, using 18 fielders and 5 pitchers in the 19-2 rubber match victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Statesmen were on the board just two batters into the game after leadoff hitter Wes Warnock singled, stole second, and advanced to third in time for an RBI single from Brendan McCauley. From there, Blayke Dendy, Dylan Coleman, and Braiden Jones hit RBI singles, and Hayden Cooper had an RBI sac fly to plate five runs. The Badgers went in order in their half of the first. 5-0 Delta State after one.
  • Cooper hit a two-RBI single to center in the second to score Coleman and Dendy with one out. Spring Hill picked up two runs in the bottom of the second off of a hit and two errors, but also left a runner on base. 7-2 Delta State after two.
  • Delta State picked up four more hits and three more runs in the third with RBI singles from Brett Burrell and Dendy. Burrell also stole third and scored on a throwing error later in the inning. Spring Hill left a runner on base after a leadoff walk in the inning. 10-2 Delta State after three.
  • The Statesmen picked up a hit from Matthew Nichols and left two on base in the fourth. Spring Hill left two on base after two hits in their half of the fourth. Blayke Dendy led the fifth with a solo homer for the eleventh DSU run. Taylor Woodcock hit an RBI single with the bases loaded to score Coleman. Warnock hit an RBI single to score Dylan Dendy, who was a pinch runner for Cooper. Woodcock later scored following a ground-out, followed by a Burrell RBI single to score Nichols. The Statesmen scored six runs on seven hits in the fifth. The Badgers left a runner on base after an HBP. 16-2 Delta State after five.
  • Matthew Martinolich scored in the sixth after Drew Capobianco was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Cole Thompson was hit by a pitch in the following at-bat, scoring Gabe Stockton from third. Peyton Badon became the third straight Statesmen to get plunked, which scored Clay Cook. Spring Hill managed a hit in the sixth. 19-2 Delta State after six.
  • Eric Newsom singled in the seventh as the Statesmen left two on base. Spring Hill had two base-runners in the seventh, but were stopped after a strikeout from Duke Jordan to end the game. 19-2 Delta State final.
UP NEXT
The Statesmen are back at home this Tuesday, February 13, for a midseason non-conference meeting with Southern Arkansas. First pitch from Ferriss Field against the Muleriders is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
