HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Knights picked up a hit in the bottom of the first, but were held off the scoreboard. Wes Warnock singled to lead off the Delta State first and scored when Brendan McCauley launched a two-run homer over the left field wall in the following at-bat. 2-0 Delta State after the first.
  • Lynn saw three straight doubles in the second as they plated two runs before DSU starter Drake Fontenot picked off a runner at first to end the inning. Dylan Dendy singled with one out in the second and advanced to second on an error. Taylor Woodcock was walked before both runners got into scoring position on a passed ball. Matthew Nichols singled to right to score both runners. He also stole second and advanced to third on a ground-out just before McCauley was hit by a pitch. Brett Burrell singled to score Nichols as McCauley also advanced to third. McCauley later scored on a passed ball. 6-2 Delta State after two.
  • The Knights fell in order in the third. Delta State scored three more runs in the bottom of the third, starting with a bases-loaded HBP to Woodcock to score Braiden Jones. Nichols hit a sac fly to left to score Hayden Cooper, then Warnock doubled to score Dylan Dendy. 9-2 Delta State after three.
  • Lynn started the fourth with a double and a two-run home run, but also stranded a runner. The Statesmen went in order in their half of the inning. 9-4 Delta State after four.
  • Both teams went in order in the fifth inning, and Lynn stranded a runner in the sixth. Lynn scored another run in the seventh after three singles in the frame. Delta State fell in order to keep the lead at four. 9-5 Delta State after seven.
  • Lynn put runners at second and third with two away in the eighth, but Brady Davis was able to strike out the final batter of the inning to keep the lead at five. Delta State had runners at first and third in Warnock and Nichols, respectively, with two outs in the eighth. Warnock created enough commotion while caught in a pickle between first and second that Nichols was free to score easily from third. The Knights loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but the Statesmen got a clutch strikeout from Braiden Jones and a line-out to Woodcock at shortstop to end the game. 10-5 Delta State final.
