Delta State Wins Game Three Walk-Off to Clinch Series Over Lynn

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State Baseball wins the series against Lynn in dramatic fashion. The Fighting Knights won game two to even the series, but the Statesmen walked off game three in the ninth with a game-winning RBI single from Triston Hickman.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One
  • Lynn struck first in the top of the first with a two-out 2 RBI double. Delta State loaded the bases after a hit by Blayke Dendy and HBPs to Brett Burrell and Braiden Jones, but the Statesmen did not plate a run. 2-0 Lynn after one.
  • The Knights fell in order in the second. Dylan Dendy doubled to lead the second before scoring on an RBI single by Taylor Woodcock. 2-1 Lynn after two.
  • Lynn scored four runs on two hits and an error in the third to extend their lead. Hayden Cooper hit an RBI single to score Blayke with two outs in the Statesmen third. Dylan Dendy hit an RBI double to score Jones. 6-3 Lynn after three.
  • Lynn plated another run in the fourth with two outs on an RBI single. The Statesmen fell in order in the bottom of the inning. 7-3 Lynn after four.
  • A bases-loaded walk with two outs plated the eighth Lynn run in the fifth. Brendan McCauley recorded a hit in the bottom of the fifth. 8-3 Lynn after five.
  • The Knights went in order in the top of the sixth. Dylan Dendy, Taylor Woodcock, and Matthew Nichols all singled in the bottom of the sixth to load the bases. Wes Warnock grounded out in the next at-bat, but gave enough time for Dylan to score from third. 8-4 Lynn after six.
  • Lynn fell in order again in the seventh. Jones and Cooper singled with two outs and moved up to scoring position after a passed ball. Dylan Dendy's fourth hit of the game scored both runners. 8-6 Lynn after seven.
  • The Knights stranded a lead-off walk in the eighth as Delta State plated another run in their half of the inning as Burrell singled to score Nichols from second. Lynn and Delta State were kept off the board in the ninth to seal the win for the Knights. 8-7 Lynn final.
Game Two
  • Both teams had base-runners, but were held off the board in the first inning. Lynn used five hits to plate four runs in the second, stranding one runner. Blayke Dendy led the bottom of the second with a triple and scored when Jones grounded out to the shortstop. 4-1 Lynn after two.
  • The teams each stranded a runner in the third inning. The Knights fell in order in the fourth. Jones walked to start the bottom of the fourth before advancing to second on a Cole Thompson single. The pair moved up a base after a passed ball, just in time for Triston Hickman to reach on an HBP. Warnock and McCauley singled to score two runs, Hickman then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at four. Burrell grounded out with runners at second and third, but allowed enough time for Warnock to score on the play. 5-4 Delta State after four.
  • Lynn regained the lead in the fifth after an RBI triple and a passed ball. Delta State fell in order. 6-5 Lynn after five.
  • Both sides sent just three to the plate in the sixth. Lynn stranded two in scoring position in the top of the seventh. Burrell singled to lead the seventh and moved to second after a walk to Cooper. Both moved into scoring position after a passed ball, and Burrell scored after Blayke Dendy grounded out for the first out of the inning. Austin Estes then pinch-ran for Cooper at third base, but was called out at home on a close call at home after a squeeze bunt. 6-6 Delta State after seven.
  • Both teams stranded runners at second and third in the eighth inning with the game on the line. The Knights fell in order in the top of the ninth. Cole Thompson doubled to represent the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Hickman flared a ball into left field where no one could make a play, as Thompson sprinted home to win the game for the Statesmen. 7-6 Delta State final.
UP NEXT
Delta State travels to Arkadelphia, AR for a midweek game on Tuesday, February 20, at 3:00 pm against Henderson State. The Statesmen begin GSC play next weekend, traveling to Jackson, TN to take on Union. Game one against the Bulldogs on Friday, February 23, is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
