Statesmen Defeat Reddies in Extra Innings

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Statesmen Baseball picked up 11 hits in their 10-7 ten-inning victory at Henderson State Tuesday night. Delta State improves to 6-5 overall heading into this weekend's GSC opening series at Union.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Delta State sent three to the plate in the first as Henderson State picked up the first hit of the game and stranded a runner. Dylan Coleman singled to lead the second, followed by a Hayden Cooper double to put the runners at second and third with no outs. Eric Newsom sent his first homer of the year over the wall in left-center to score the first three DSU runs. The Reddies stranded a runner at third in the second. 3-0 Delta State after two.
  • The Statesmen had runners at the corners with two away, but did not score in the top of the third. HSU scored their first run on a sac fly after a runner reached third on two errors. 3-1 Delta State after three.
  • The Statesmen sent three to the plate again in the fourth and stopped HSU's momentum with a 4-6-3 double play in the bottom of the fourth. DSU had two base runners in the fifth, but a double play ended the inning. The Reddies left one on base after two hits in the bottom of the fifth. Brett Burrell reached on an error in the sixth and moved to second on another error. He then traded places with Cooper, who hit an RBI double over the right fielder's head. Henderson plated two runs off an RBI sac fly and an error in the bottom of the sixth. 4-3 Delta State after six.
  • Delta State put Matthew Nichols and Wes Warnock in scoring position just in time for Brett Burrell to hit a 2 RBI single to left field. The Reddies fell in order as Duke Jordan struck out two in the bottom of the seventh. 6-3 Delta State after seven.
  • Delta State left a runner on base after a walk to Cole Thompson in the top of the eighth. The Reddies plated three runs to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth on one hit, three walks, an HBP, and an error.  Tied 6-6 after eight.
  • Warnock was walked with one away and Brendan McCauley was hit by a pitch to put Warnock in scoring position. Brett Burrell hit an RBI single to left to regain the lead for the Statesmen. HSU tied the game back in the ninth with an RBI double. Tied 7-7 after nine.
  • Delta State regained the lead in the tenth after Triston Hickman drew a walk with two outs and stole second in time to be doubled in by Warnock. Wes scored from second on an RBI single by McCauley. He then scored after Burrell sent an RBI triple to the wall in right field. Josh Hill struck out two as the Statesmen closed the door in the bottom of the tenth. 10-7 Delta State final in ten.
UP NEXT
The Statesmen begin GSC play this weekend, traveling to Jackson, TN to take on Union. Game one against the Bulldogs on Friday, February 23, is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
