Lady Statesmen Drop Doubleheader to #18 Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Delta State Softball wrapped their midweek road trip with a Wednesday doubleheader at Pittsburg State. The Lady Statesmen return to Cleveland this weekend for a GSC homestand against Montevallo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One
  • The Lady Statesmen left a runner on base in the first after Sydney Pevey drew a walk. The Gorillas struck first with two outs after scoring on a failed pickoff attempt. 1-0 Pittsburg State after one.
  • Delta State tied the game in the top of the second when Kyleigh Wheaton hit an RBI triple to score Calli McConnell. Pittsburg State recorded four hits, three of which were doubles, in the second inning to plate three runs and regain the lead. 4-1 Pittsburg State after two.
  • Pevey recorded a one-out single in the third just before Abbi Cataldo sent a homer over the left-field fence to get the Lady Statesmen back within a run. The Gorillas stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the third. 4-3 Pittsburg State after three.
  • Nevaeh Lopez drew a walk in the fourth but was left on base. Pitt State picked up three more runs and two more hits in their half of the inning. 7-3 Pittsburg State after four.
  • Cataldo picked up a double as the Lady Statesmen left another runner on in the fifth. The Gorillas went in order in the bottom of the fifth. The Lady Statesmen sent three to the plate in the sixth inning as the Gorillas scored two more runs on four hits. 9-3 Pittsburg State after six.
  • Raegan Stafford reached first base after a dropped third strike and later scored on an RBI double by MyCala Helms. Pevey also doubled in the seventh, but the Lady Statesmen could not score another run. 9-4 Pittsburg State final.
Game Two
  • The Lady Statesmen sent three to the plate in the first as the Gorillas picked up two hits in the first inning. The Lady Statesmen took the lead in the second with a leadoff homer from Cataldo as Pitt State fell in order. 1-0 Delta State after two.
  • DSU went in order in the third. Pitt State scored five in the third with two home runs and a double. 5-1 Pittsburg State after three.
  • McConnell singled for DSU in the fourth. A two-RBI double scored two more PSU runs. 7-1 Pittsburg State after four.
  • Bailey Way led the fifth inning with a solo home run to right field. A Lopez double and Stafford single put two in scoring position with no outs. Lopez scored on a Helms sac fly and Stafford scored on a lineout from Pevey. The Gorillas plated two more runs after a solo home run and an RBI single in their half of the fifth. 9-4 Pittsburg State after five.
  • Wheaton picked up a single for DSU in the sixth. Pitt State added another run on an RBI single. 10-4 Pittsburg State after six.
  • Stafford reached on a fielding error and scored after a Pevey single in the seventh. Cataldo singled and McConnell doubled with two outs to put two in scoring position. Wheaton doubled to score both runners. 10-7 Pittsburg State final.
ON THE MOUND
  • Game one starter Emma Enderud pitched 4.0 innings, allowing 6 runs on 9 hits. She struck out 5 batters without allowing a single walk.
  • Audry Rumsey pitched the fifth inning of game one for DSU, allowing 3 runs on 1 hit.
  • Morgan Grubb pitched the sixth inning of game one, allowing no runs and 1 hit.
  • Game two starter Yazmin Jackson pitched 2.2 innings, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits.
  • Emma Enderud pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits. She also struck out four batters.
UP NEXT
The Lady Statesmen are back at home this weekend for a three-game GSC series against Montevallo beginning on Friday, March 1. First pitch from University Field is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
