Five-Run Sixth Inning Propels Lady Statesmen Past Montevallo

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State Softball picks up their first GSC win of the year with a Friday night win over the Montevallo Falcons. The teams were tied at 6 in the bottom of the sixth when the Lady Statesmen plated five runs to take the lead, beginning with a solo homer by MyCala Helms.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons struck first with two runs in the top of the first after an error and an RBI single. The Lady Statesmen sent three to the plate in their half of the inning. 2-0 Montevallo after one.
  • A two-run home run plated two more Falcons in the top of the second. The Lady Statesmen got within a run of the Falcons in the bottom of the second after Kyleigh Wheaton hit an RBI single and was later scored by Bailey Way on an RBI double that Way also scored on. 4-3 Montevallo after two.
  • The Falcons went in order in the third inning. Sydney Pevey singled to start the third for DSU and moved to second when Abbi Cataldo was walked. A sac bunt by Calli McConnell moved them into scoring position in time for Emma Collier to hit a 2 RBI double. 5-4 Delta State after three.
  • The Falcons regained the lead in the top of the fourth with two runs on three hits. DSU tied the game at six when Cataldo hit an RBI single to score Pevey. Tied 6-6 after four.
  • Both teams fell in order in the fifth inning. Montevallo stranded a runner in the top of the sixth. MyCala Helms led the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer over the left-field wall. DSU loaded the bases with no outs after the HR, but were forced to wait until there were two outs for Way to hit a 2 RBI single, followed by two more runs scoring, including way on a throwing error on the same play. 11-6 Delta State after six.
  • Montevallo scored two more runs in the seventh and had a runner at second with two outs, but back-to-back strikeouts from Emma Enderud would end the scoring threat and the game. 11-8 Delta State final.
ON THE MOUND
  • Starter Morgan Grubb faced three batters and allowed two runs.
  • Emma Enderud pitched 6.2 innings, allowing 6 runs on 9 hits. She struck out 10 batters and walked two.

The Lady Statesmen conclude the series with Montevallo tomorrow (Saturday 3/2) with a doubleheader at University field beginning at 1:00 pm.
