Statesmen Drop Rubber Match With Harding

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State Baseball wrapped up their season-opening games with Harding Saturday afternoon with the series tied at a game a piece. The Statesmen led early in the rubber match against HU, but the Bisons responded with ten unanswered runs to win the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bisons picked up the first hit of the game in the first, but were unable to score the runner. Brendan McCauley reached first on an error and went first to third on a single by Brett Burrell. Braiden Jones singled to score McCauley, sending Burrell to third as well. A throwing error by HU's shortstop in Triston Hickman's AB allowed Burrell and Jones to score as well. 3-0 Delta State after 1.
  • Harding immediately answered with three runs of their own on four hits in the second to tie the game. Delta State picked up a hit but could not score in the second. Tied 3-3 after 2.
  • Both teams could only get one base-runner a piece in the third inning. Harding strung six hits together in the fourth inning to plate six runs. DSU got two hits from Wes Warnock and Brendan McCauley with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. 9-3 Harding after 4.
  • Noah Magee struck out the side in the top of the fifth, but the Statesmen also fell in order in their half of the inning. Harding picked up another run on a two-out RBI single in the top of the sixth as the Statesmen again went in order. 10-3 Harding after 6.
  • Both teams sent four to the plate in the seventh inning. Harding went in order in the eighth, and Hickman picked up another hit for DSU. The Bisons stranded a runner in the ninth after an HBP to lead off the inning. The Statesmen went in order again in the ninth to seal the win for Harding. 10-3 final.
UP NEXT
The Statesmen are on the road next weekend for a three-game series against Spring Hill College. Game one on Friday, 2/9, from Mobile, AL, is scheduled for 6:00 pm. Saturday, 2/10, will be a doubleheader, with the first game scheduled for 1:00 pm.
