Statesmen Score Eight Unanswered to Defeat Montevallo

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State Baseball trailed the Falcons early, but scored eight unanswered runs down the stretch to pick up GSC win number four. The Statesmen out-hit Montevallo 8-5 as the Green & White defense stranded ten Montevallo baserunners.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montevallo picked up the first hit of the game in the first, but both teams were kept off the scoreboard. Both teams sent three to the plate in the second inning. Montevallo took the lead in the third off two separate RBI singles. DSU fell in order in the bottom of the third. 2-0 Montevallo after three.
  • Both teams stranded no-out walks in the fourth. The Falcons stranded two in the top of the fifth as Triston Hickman hit a solo homer to left to put DSU on the board. 2-1 Montevallo after five.
  • Another Falcon was stranded after a two-out single in the sixth. RBI singles from Blayke Dendy, Braiden Jones, and Taylor Woodcock plated four runs to give DSU the lead. 5-2 Delta State after six.
  • Two more Montevallo runners with left on base after walks with two outs in the top of the seventh. DSU plated three more runs in the bottom of the seventh off a Dendy RBI single, a Hayden Cooper RBI single, and a Jones RBI sac fly. 8-2 Delta State after seven.
  • Both teams left a runner on base with no hits in the eighth inning. Montevallo had a one-out baserunner after a walk in the ninth, but Logan Cromer picked up a strikeout for the third out to end the game. 8-2 Delta State final.
ON THE MOUND
  • Starter Drake Fontenot pitched 6.0 innings, allowing 2 runs (earned) on 5 hits with 7 Ks to 3 walks.
  • Tate Duncan pitched 2.0 innings, allowing no runs or hits with 2 strikeouts and 3 walks.
  • Logan Cromer closed the game in the ninth with no runs or hits while striking out 2 and walking one.
