Statesmen Walk-Off Trojans in Millington

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Delta State got a look a next year's newest addition to the GSC on the baseball diamond Tuesday afternoon as they traveled to the Volunteer State for a neutral site game against Trevecca Nazarene. The Statesmen surrendered the lead in the top of the ninth, but fought back to earn a walk-off win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Trojans stranded the bases loaded in the top of the first as the Statesmen left a runner at second. TNU struck first in the second with a one-out RBI single. Delta State took the lead in the bottom of the second on an error and a two-RBI double by Drew Capobianco. 3-1 Delta State after two.
  • Both teams went in order in the third and stranded runners in the fourth inning. TNU stranded two in the top of the fifth. Cole Thompson hit an RBI double to right center to score Brett Burrell, who reached on an error. 4-1 Delta State after five.
  • Each side was held off the scoreboard in the sixth and seventh innings. Trevecca Nazarene loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but plated just one run off a sac fly. DSU went in order in the bottom of the eighth. 4-2 Delta State after eight.
  • The Trojans regained the lead in the top of the ninth after a one-out single and two-run home run. Matthew Martinolich led the bottom of the ninth with a double. Capobianco followed the double with a bunt that was misplayed by the TNU pitcher, allowing Drew to reach base and Martinolich to score from second. Clay Cook laid down a sac bunt to move Capobianco to second. Matthew Nichols was hit by a pitch and Burrell singled to shallow left to load the bases. TNU made one last pitching change, but Dylan Coleman sent his second pitch into left field to score Capobianco and win the game. 6-5 Delta State final.
On The Mound
  • Hammer Franks started the game for the Statesmen, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing just one run on four hits. Hammer struck out six Trojans with just one walk against.
  • Brady Davis pitched the next 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit with a strikeout.
  • Cade Whitley faced two batters, walking both. He was charged with two runs.
  • Kameron Koch pitched the eighth inning and faced four batters. He struck out two and walked one.
  • Josh Hill pitched the ninth inning, allowing three runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
UP NEXT
Statesmen Baseball returns to Cleveland this weekend for a three-game GSC series against the West Florida Argonauts. Game one on Friday, March 22, is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
