Lady Statesmen Fall in Doubleheader Against West Florida

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Lady Statesmen started a new GSC series Saturday afternoon against the West Florida Argonauts. The Lady Statesmen fell in the first two games of the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One
  • West Florida picked up two hits in the first as the Lady Statesmen fell in order. The Argos scored a run on three hits and left two on base in the second. Kyleigh Wheaton singled and Abbi Cataldo reached base on an HBP. 1-0 UWF after two.
  • A solo homer and an RBI single plated two UWF runs in the third. MyCala Helms reached base on a two-out walk. 3-0 UWF after three.
  • The Argos scored three in the fourth on three hits and an error. Wheaton picked up another single as Calli McConnell and Laney Daigrepont were walked in the bottom of the fourth. 6-0 UWF after four.
  • UWF stranded a runner in the fifth as the Lady Statesmen went in order. Each team recorded a hit in the sixth as McConnell earned DSU's. The Argos left two on base in the seventh, and Alyssa Gover picked up a two-out hit for the Lady Statesmen. 6-0 UWF final.
Game Two
  • UWF recorded a hit as DSU went in order in the first inning. The Argos fell in order in the second. DSU left two on base after a walk to McConnell and a hit by Cataldo. West Florida scored the first runs on two RBI singles in the third inning. Gover was walked to start the DSU third and moved to second after a groundout by Raegan Stafford. Gover scored when MyCala Helms sent an RBI single up the middle. 2-1 UWF after three.
  • UWF scored another run in the fourth on an RBI double. McConnell tripled to start the bottom of the fourth and scored on a passed ball. Cataldo and Gover both drew walks in the inning as well. 3-2 UWF after four.
  • The Argos plated two more runs on a fielder's choice and a home run in the fifth. Wheaton earned another hit in the bottom of the fifth. 5-2 UWF after five.
  • West Florida scored three runs on two hits and an error in the sixth inning. Cataldo hit a solo home run for DSU. 8-3 UWF after six.
  • Three more hits for the Argos scored two more runs in the top of the seventh as Delta State sent three to the plate in the inning. 10-3 UWF final.

UP NEXT
The Lady Statesmen resume the series against the Argos tomorrow at University Field. First pitch on Sunday, March 24, is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
