Statesmen Pick Up 12 Hits in Midweek Loss at Arkansas Tech

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State Baseball began a two-game midweek series at Arkansas Tech Tuesday night. The Statesmen picked up twelve hits, but fell in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brendan McCauley reached base on an error and reached third base on a second error. He scored the first run of the game in the first inning on a Dylan Coleman RBI single. The Wonder Boys picked up a hit, but ground into a double play and left a runner on after a walk. 1-0 Delta State after one.
  • DSU sent three to the plate as ATU left another runner on base in the second inning. Delta State extended their lead in the third after a solo homer by Clay Cook. ATU picked up another runner on an HBP, but the runner was also picked off at first base. 2-0 Delta State after three.
  • Matthew Martinolich singled to right with one out in the fourth and advanced to third on a throwing error. Eric Newsom batted him in with a sac fly to right center. ATU tied the game in the fourth on four hits. Tied 3-3 after four.
  • DSU picked up two hits from McCauley and Brett Burrell in the fifth. The Wonder Boys scored two to take the lead on an RBI double and an RBI groundout. 5-3 Arkansas Tech after five.
  • Delta State sent three to the plate in the sixth. A three-run home run extended the ATU lead in the bottom of the sixth. 8-3 Arkansas Tech after six.
  • The Statesmen fell in order as the Wonder Boys stranded two in the seventh. Jonathan Dewberry hit a 2 RBI double in the eighth to score McCauley and Coleman. A wild pitch scored an ATU runner in the bottom of the inning. 9-5 Arkansas Tech after eight.
  • Cook and McCauley picked up singles in the ninth with two outs, but were left on base to end the game. 9-5 Arkansas Tech final.
UP NEXT
The midweek series against the Wonder Boys concludes tomorrow at 1:00 pm. DSU is on the road this weekend for a GSC series against Alabama-Huntsville beginning Friday (3/8) at 4:00 pm.
