Lady Statesmen Record 10 Hits in Win Over Blazers

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Lady Statesmen recorded ten hits, including home runs from Morgan Grubb and Emma Collier, in their game three win at Valdosta State. Delta State starting pitcher Yazmin Jackson recorded eight strikeouts over her 6.1 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams went in order in the first inning as starting pitcher Yazmin Jackson picked up two strikeouts in the bottom half of the frame. Sydney Pevey singled to start the top of the second and moved to third on a one-out single by Kyleigh Wheaton. Wheaton moved to second on a stolen base. Morgan Grubb brought everyone in with a three-run homer to left on a full count. Emma Collier drew a walk in the following at-bat, but a double play ended the DSU half of the second. VSU loaded the bases with one out in the home half of the second, but a runner was caught stealing just before another Jackson strikeout ended the scoring threat. 3-0 Delta State after two.
  • Abbi Cataldo started the third inning with a single and moved to third on a one-out double by Calli McConnell. Cataldo scored on an RBI single by Sydney Pevey, and McConnell advanced to third as well on the play. Pevey stole second to put two in scoring position. Laney Daigrepont hit a sac fly to center to score McConnell, and Wheaton singled up the middle to score Pevey from second. Valdosta State picked up their first hit and put two in scoring position with one out, but Jackson struck out the final two batters to end the third inning. 6-0 Delta State after three.
  • Emma Collier hit a home run to left center to start the top of the fourth. Raegan Stafford then drew a walk, but was out at second base when Cataldo reached on a fielder's choice. Mattie Granberry came in to run for Cataldo and moved to second on a groundout by Helms. McConnell brought Granberry home after an RBI single to right for the eighth DSU run. VSU stranded two more runners in the home half of the fourth. 8-0 Delta State after four.
  • The Lady Statesmen sent three to the plate in the top of the fifth. The Blazers plated a run on a sac fly in the bottom of the fifth. 8-1 Delta State after five.
  • Cataldo was DSU's lone baserunner in the sixth after an HBP with one out. Valdosta State loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but Jackson recorded another clutch K to retire the side. The Lady Statesmen hit the ball hard, but could not manage a baserunner in the seventh. The Blazers added two solo home runs and an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, but the Lady Statesmen held on for the win. 8-4 Delta State final.
ON THE MOUND
  • Starter Yazmin Jackson pitched 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits. She also struck out eight Blazer batters with six walks.
  • Emma Enderud pitched the final 0.2 innings, allowing two runs on one hit with two walks.

The Lady Statesmen resume GSC play next weekend with a three-game series at Lee University. Day one will feature a doubleheader in Cleveland, TN, on Saturday, April 20, beginning at 12:00 p.m. CT.
