Statesmen Fall in Final Non-Conference Game of 2024 Season

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Statesmen hosted Henderson State Tuesday afternoon for the final non-conference game of the 2024 season. Delta State recorded ten hits, but fell short after the Reddies plated the final eight runs of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Henderson State went in order in the top of the first. Brendan McCauley singled with one out and scored on a Dylan Coleman homer to center. Hayden Cooper then drew a walk and scored on a Dylan Dendy RBI double. Dylan came around when Blayke Dendy hit a single down the left field line. The Statesmen left the bases loaded after Cole Thompson was hit by a pitch and Matthew Nichols drew a walk. 4-0 Delta State after one.
  • The Reddies went in order after an inning-ending double play in the second. Cooper was the only DSU baserunner in the second after a two-out single. Henderson State scored four runs on five hits, including a solo home run, in the top of the third. Blayke Dendy was the only DSU baserunner in the frame after a leadoff single. Tied 4-4 after three.
  • HSU left two on base in the top of the fourth. Dylan Coleman singled with two outs in the home half of the fourth and scored on a Cooper RBI double. 5-4 Delta State after four.
  • A sac fly allowed the Reddies to tie the game in the top of the fifth. Blayke Dendy doubled to start DSU's half of the inning and moved to second after a walk to Nichols, but both were left on base. Neither team left anyone on base in the sixth after the lone HSU runner was picked off at first base by Nichols. Tied 5-5 after six.
  • The Reddies took the lead in the top of the seventh with three runs on two hits and a balk that scored the eighth HSU run. Dylan Dendy drew a walk and Jonathan Dewberry singled in the bottom of the seventh. 8-5 HSU after seven.
  • Four more hits and an error led to four more Reddie runs in the top of the eighth. HSU also left the bases loaded at the end of their half of the inning. Delta State sent three to the plate in the frame. 12-5 HSU after eight.
  • Henderson State left one on in the ninth after a two-out walk. Delta State went in order in the bottom of the ninth. 12-5 HSU final.
On The Mound
  • Starter Hammer Franks pitched 2.2 innings, allowing four runs on four hits with a strikeout and two walks.
  • Tate Duncan pitched 1.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
  • Christian Clayson pitched 1.2 innings, facing five batters with no runs or hits allowed. He struckout one batter and hit one.
  • Jackson Wilson faced four batters, allowing two runs on one hit with a walk as well.
  • Noah Magee faced seven batters, allowing four runs on three hits with one walk.
  • Josh Hill faced six batters, allowing one run and two hits with two walks.
  • Duke Jordan pitched the ninth inning. He allowed faced four batters with no runs or hits allowed and one walk.
UP NEXT
The Statesmen are back at home this weekend to take on Mississippi College for the final GSC homestand of the season before the conference tournament in Oxford, AL May 3-7. First pitch for game one against the Choctaws on Friday, April 26 is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
