HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Choctaws scored after an HBP, a double, and a groundout plated a runner with two outs. Brendan McCauley reached on an error and Dylan Coleman drew a walk in the inning. 1-0 MC after one.
  • MC went in order in the second; Blayke Dendy drew a walk and Clay Cook singled in the home half of the inning. Two more MC runs were scored in the third on a two-RBI single with the bases loaded. Wes Warnock and McCauley drew walks to start the bottom of the third. Coleman singled to load the bases with no outs. Hayden Cooper hit a sac fly to center that advanced all three runners, scoring Warnock on the play. Dylan Dendy then singled to score McCauley, followed by a fielder's choice by Blayke Dendy that resulted in another DSU run and no outs due to an error. Cook singled to score Dylan and move Blayke to third. An error on a steal attempt by Cook allowed Blayke to score from third while also allowing Cook to advance to third. He scored on a groundout by Triston Hickman. 6-3 Delta State after three.
  • Each side sent just three to the plate in the fourth. MC tied the game at six in the top of the fifth with three runs on four hits. Delta State went in order again in the bottom of the frame. Tied 6-6 after five.
  • The lone Choctaw baserunner was caught stealing in the top of the sixth. Clay Cook saw his leadoff single in the sixth turn into the go-ahead run when he scored from third on a sac fly by Warnock to left. 7-6 Delta State after six.
  • MC had a runner at second with two outs in the top of the seventh. The Choctaws tried to send the runner home after a two-out single to left, but a perfect throw by left fielder Blayke Dendy would erase the scoring chance as Hickman applied the tag at home just in time. The Statesmen did not have a baserunner in the bottom of the seventh. 7-6 Delta State after seven.
  • The Choctaws stranded two runners in the eighth inning; Blayke extended the DSU advantage with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the eighth. MC had the tying run at second with two outs in the top of the ninth, but a pop-up to Dylan Dendy at first would end the scoring threat and the game. 8-6 Delta State final.
