Lady Statesmen Split with Reddies, Win Game Two in Walkoff

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State Softball split Wednesday's midweek meetings with the GAC's Henderson State Reddies. The Lady Statesmen scored in the seventh inning of game two to tie the game at four before walking off with the win in the eighth inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One
  • Each side went in order in the first inning; Henderson State picked up the first hit of the game in the second inning. The Reddies scored in the third on a two-RBI double. Laney Daigrepont and Lindsey Coffey recorded the first DSU hits in the bottom of the third. 2-0 HSU after three.
  • Henderson State recorded two hits in the fourth; Sydney Pevey doubled in the bottom of the fourth. The Reddies left two on base as Delta State picked up two hits in the fifth inning. 2-0 HSU after five.
  • The Reddies went in order in the sixth. Delta State loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but grounded out to end the inning. HSU fell in order again in the seventh; Delta State left one on base in the bottom half of the inning. 2-0 HSU final.
Game Two
  • Henderson State left a runner on in the first after a leadoff walk. Pevey walked to start the home half of the first and moved to second when MyCala Helms reached on a bunt single. Abbi Cataldo then singled to score Pevey and move Helms to third. Emma Collier singled with two outs to score Helms. 2-0 Delta State after one.
  • Henderson State picked up its first hit and left two on base in the second inning; Delta State sent three to the plate. The Reddies hit two two-run home runs with two outs in the top of the third; Cataldo was left on base after a two-out single. 4-2 HSU after three.
  • The Reddies fell in order in the top of the fourth. Calli McConnell doubled with one out in the home half of the fourth and advanced to third after a groundout. McConnell scored when Nevaeh Lopez reached on an error with two outs. 4-3 HSU after four.
  • HSU left two on base as the Lady Statesmen went in order in the fifth inning. The Reddies fell in order in the sixth as DSU left Kyleigh Wheaton at third base after a leadoff single. Henderson State left runners at the corners in the top of the seventh. Lopez singled to start the seventh, but was out at second after Raegan Stafford reached on a fielder's choice. Stafford scored in the following at-bat when Pevey doubled to left center. She was left at third to end the inning. Tied 4-4 after seven.
  • Each side started with a runner at second base to start the extra inning. HSU moved their runner to third on a bunt, but left her their after two groundouts. Cataldo was placed at second for DSU in the bottom of the eighth. She moved to third on a Wheaton sac bunt. Collier popped out in foul territory on the first base side, but the ball was hit deep enough to score Cataldo from third on the tag-up. 5-4 Delta State final.

UP NEXT
The Lady Statesmen welcome Christian Brothers to University Field for a three-game series this weekend. Game one of Saturday's (4/6) doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
