HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One
- CBU struck first in game one with two hits, including a one-out RBI double, in the top of the first. Wes Warnock singled to start the bottom of the first and moved to second on a Brendan McCauley bunt. Brett Burrell then singled to score Warnock and moved to second on a passed ball. Dylan Coleman then singled to score Burrell. 2-1 Delta State after one.
- The Bucs recorded a hit in the top of the second. Matthew Martinolich reached on a one-out error and moved to second on a Triston Hickman single. Warnock singled to load the bases just in time for a McCauley 2 RBI single to left that scored Martinolich and Hickman. 4-2 Delta State after two.
- CBU was unable to plate a run after a leadoff walk in the third. Dylan Dendy and Blayke Dendy reached to start the bottom of the third after a single and walk, respectively. Hayden Cooper was walked to load the bases with no outs. Martinolich hit a ground ball to the CBU second baseman, but a bad throw allowed the Dendys to score. The ball went to the left fielder, who also recorded an error on an errant throw, which allowed Cooper to score. Martinolich also tried to score on the play, but was out on a close play at home plate. 7-1 Delta State after three.
- Christian Brothers had one baserunner after a hit in the top of the fourth. Burrell doubled to left center to start the home half of the inning and scored on a Dylan Dendy RBI single. Dylan advanced to third on a groundout and scored on an RBI single by Cooper. 9-1 Delta State after four.
- CBU had a hit in the top of the fifth, DSU left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth with no hits in the inning. The Bucs scored two in the sixth after a solo homer and an RBI single. Cooper recorded another DSU hit in the bottom of the sixth. 9-3 Delta State after six.
- The Bucs left two on base in the top of the seventh. Warnock and McCauley singled in the bottom of the seventh. Dylan Coleman also singled with one out to score Warnock from second. 10-3 Delta State after seven.
- Christian Brothers left a runner on base in the eighth after a two-out HBP. The Statesmen left Cooper and Martinolich on base in the bottom of the eighth after an HBP and a walk. The Bucs did plate one run in the top of the ninth, but the Statesmen held on for the series win. 10-4 Delta State final.
Game Two
- The Bucs had a baserunner after a walk in the first inning. Warnock and Burrell singled in the bottom of the first. CBU went in order as Cooper drew a walk in the second inning. Christian Brothers fell again in order in the third. Warnock drew a walk and Burrell singled to put runners at the corners with two outs in the third. Dylan Coleman then homered to left to bring everyone in. 3-0 Delta State after three.
- CBU left one on base in the fourth after a two-out walk. Drew Capobianco drew a walk, Warnock singled, and Cole Thompson walked to load the bases with one out in the fourth inning. A passed ball allowed Capobianco to score before Burrel was walked to load the bases once more. Coleman doubled down the left field line to score Warnock and Thompson. A passed ball scored Burrell and moved Coleman to third in time for an RBI sac fly by Dylan Dendy. 8-0 Delta State after four.
- The Bucs had a baserunner after a walk in the fifth, but Logan Cromer did not allow a hit through the first five innings. Warnock reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a Burrell RBI single. 9-0 Delta State after five.
- CBU first hit came in the top of the sixth as a run also came across on an error. Jonathan Dewberry picked up a single for the Statesmen in the bottom of the sixth. CBU had another hit in the seventh, but a double play and a pop up would end the game, giving DSU the sweep. 9-1 Delta State final.
On The Mound
- Game one starter Drake Fontenot pitched 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He struck out eight batters with four walks.
- Jackson Wilson pitched the last 3.0 innings of game one, allowing one run and one hit with three strikeouts and two walks.
- Game two starter Logan Cromer pitched 6.0 innings, allowing just one hit and one run with four strikeouts and three walks.
- Tate Duncan pitched the seventh inning of game two, allowing one hit but no runs.
UP NEXT
The Statesmen are on the road next week for a midweek game at Arkansas-Monticello and a new GSC series at Valdosta State. The non-conference game at UAM on Tuesday, April 9 is scheduled for a 3:00 pm first pitch. Game one at Valdosta State on Friday, April 12 is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
