Oen’s first career goal pushes Statesmen to a 1-0 victory in season opener

Cleveland, Miss – Freshman midfielder Veborn Oen scored his first career goal to help lead the Delta State University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over St. Edward's University Thursday (Sept. 5) afternoon in a rainy Delta Field.

With just over 11 minutes left in the game Colby Nesbit delivered a cross to the middle of the box where Chad Hudson headed the ball back to the foot of Oen who put away his first career goal. This would be enough for the Statesmen to hold off the St. Edwards Hilltoppers and take the 1-0 win.

The Statesmen recorded their first clean sheet of the season behind Mason Baglio in goal, who had five saves including a big save at the 75th minute mark from a tough shot by St. Edward's Vicente Alvarez. The starting backline of Santiago Rossi, Hudson, and Malo Clement played great defensively limiting the Hilltoppers to five shots on goal.  Nesbit and Micah Soper also contributed to the defense as wingbacks.

The Statesmen are back in action Saturday (Sept. 7) at Delta Field against the Dustdevils of Texas A&M International at 10 a.m. (CDT)
