Women's Basketball Drops Choctaws 61-46

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Lady Statesmen basketball team (10-7, 6-5  GSC) faced off against the Mississippi College Choctaws (9-8, 5-6 GSC) and shot 20-for-49 in their 61-46 victory at Sillers Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
DSU went 3-for-10 from the field in the first quarter of play while shooting 100% from the free throw line. There were five lead changes in the first half, but the Lady Statesmen were able to take the lead, 25-23, with a two-point field goal from Dakiya Toney right before the half.

Although Mississippi College shot better from the field, Toney found her groove and led the Lady Statesmen with eight points and eight rebounds in the first half, trailing right behind sophomore Madi Kate Vucannnon with six points. The Lady Statesmen forced nine turnovers, holding the Choctaws to 23 points in the first half.

Coming out of the break, the Green-and-White started the 3rd quarter very strong, shooting 67% from the field. Mississippi College forced 8 turnovers, but the Lady Statesmen made up for it on the offensive end by out scoring the Choctaws 13-10 in the 3rd quarter. Senior Grace Watson and junior Olivia Allen led the 3rd quarter with four points each.

The Lady Statesmen were off to a slow start at the beginning of the 4th quarter. The Choctaws shot back-to-back three-pointers putting them right behind the Lady Statesmen, 42-40. Watson extended the lead with her and-one late in the 4th quarter. Allen got hot scoring 9 of her 13 points in the final quarter.

Watson led the Lady Statesmen offensively, scoring 16 points. Toney finished with 10 points, pulling down a career-high 17 rebounds, securing her second double-double in the last three games. 

The Lady Statesmen had four players scoring eight or more points in the contest, as they shot 48% from the field. DSU also dominated the glass, as they out rebounded the Choctaws 34-26.

Delta State will continue conference play, as they take on the Bucs from Christian Brothers University on Thursday, Jan. 23. Tipoff will be at 5:30 p.m from Walter Sillers Coliseum.
