Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen (8-5, 4-3 GSC) fell to the Argos of the University of West Florida (9-3, 5-1 GSC) on Thursday night at Sillers Coliseum. Senior guard
Wakiryah Daniels scored a season-high 18 points.
First-quarter play featured strong offensive performances from both teams. For Delta State, the scoring was spread out evenly with five Lady Statesmen scoring buckets to take a 15-13 lead in the first 10 minutes of play.
West Florida tied the game at 21-21 with just over three minutes to play in the first half, but a
Madi Kate Vuncannon three-pointer quickly put the lead back in Delta State's possession. DSU took a narrow 26-25 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Argos took their first lead of the night early in the third quarter, 27-26. The rest of the third quarter featured five lead changes but ended with the Lady Statesmen ahead 42-35.
Wakirya Daniels gave DSU its largest lead of the night, 44-35, with 8:52 remaining in the game.
West Florida slowly chipped away at their deficit, ultimately taking its largest lead at the 4:20 mark, 52-48.
The closing two minutes of the game featured Daniels tying the game with two jumpers in back-to-back possessions but saw the Argos taking the victory 59-56.
Up next for Delta State is a conference matchup with Valdosta State on Saturday, Jan. 4. Tipoff at Sillers Coliseum is slated for 2 p.m.
