CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Men's Basketball Team (9-10, 5-8 GSC) would grind out their third straight win with a 69-59 win over the Bulldogs from Union University (11-7, 7-6 GSC) Saturday afternoon in Walter Sillers Coliseum.
The Statesmen shined on the defensive side of the ball as they held the Bulldog Offense that averaged 77.3 points per game to a season low 37% field goal percentage.
The duo of
Keithean Brooks and
Chris Terrell lifted the green and white as Brooks led all scorers with 21 points two blocks and a game ending steal. Terrell continued to add on to his lead in the nation with three steals in the contest along with 19 points.
Union and DSU would battle for the first ten minutes of the first half before a Delta State 23-9 run would give the green and white a 38-24 lead at the break. Brooks and Terrell scored double digits in the first half for the Green and white Brooks had 13 and Terrell had 10.
The Bulldogs would start the second half with a 13-2 run to make it 40-37 with 14:23 remaining in the game. Delta State would stop momentum after a flagrant foul followed by a Terrell layup giving Delta State a 44-37 lead.
The Coliseum would erupt in the second half as Brooks would steal an errant Bulldog pass to follow up with a tomahawk one-handed slam to push the Delta State lead to nine at 50-41.
Three minutes later after a 6-0 Union run,
Je'Marion Westbrook would jump the passing lane for a one-handed jam to keep DSU ahead 52-47. After a Statesmen stop, Terrell would knock one down from beyond the arch to make it 55-47.
In the final minutes, the Statesmen had two solid plays from junior guard
Kolby Horace. The Mobile native hit a corner three with 3:27 left to keep Delta State ahead by three-possessions. With 30 seconds left in regulation, Horace would get a key rebound and pass it ahead to Westbrook as the Marianna, Ark., Native would slam it home to make it a 67-59 game.
After another defensive stop by the Statesmen, Terrell would knock down two free throws to finalize a 69-59 win, to increase the streak to three games.
Delta State will hit the road next weekend as they travel to Montgomery, Ala., on Thursday to take on the Warhawks from Auburn University at Montgomery. Tip off Thursday evening will be at 7:30 p.m. (CDT).
