MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Delta State University Women's Basketball Team (11-9, 7-7 GSC) fell behind early in a 67-59 loss to Auburn University at Montgomery (9-10, 7-7 GSC) Thursday evening in the AUM Athletics Complex in Montgomery.
Delta State would respond to a 7-0 AUM run with a 8-4 run behind the front court trio of
Grace Watson,
Dakiya Toney, and
Martyna Czescik in the first quarter to trail 13-10 with just over 2:00 in the opening frame. Toney led the trio with 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench. AUM would finish the quarter on a 6-3 run to make it 19-13 after one.
The Lady Statesmen would go cold from the field in the second quarter shooting 2-18 from the field as AUM would pull ahead to a 35-18 lead at the half.
Delta State would respond in the third quarter with an 11-point quarter from
Wakiryah Daniels. Daniels led all DSU scorers with 13 points would knock down back-to-back threes late in the third quarter as AUM led 49-40 going into the final frame.
Momentum would stay with the green and white in the beginning of the final frame as a 14-6 run fueled by the shooting from
Madi Kate Vuncannon would bring the Lady Statesmen within one, trailing 55-54 with 4:05 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Warhawks would respond with a 12-5 run to finish the game ahead 67-59.
The Lady Statesmen look to bounce back, finishing their road trip at Montevallo this Saturday against the Falcons from the University of Montevallo. Tipoff will start at 2:00 p.m., (CDT).
