CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University women's soccer team (3-3-4, 2-1-3 GSC) fell to the Falcons from the University of Montevallo (8-2-1, 7-0-1 GSC) 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Delta Field.
The Green and White out shot the Falcons 15-5 on the afternoon.
The Lady Statesmen generated consistent offensive pressure from the opening whistle, firing 10 shots in the first half and keeping the Montevallo defense on its heels. Junior midfielder
Caroline Chandler led the charge with a team-high four shots, including two on target, while
Mackenzie Winters,
Casey Stalder, and
Emma Earwood each added quality scoring chances that forced key saves from the Falcon goalkeeper.
Defensively, Delta State's back line of
Ava Steven,
Kennedi Banar,
Mackenzie Winters, and
Ava Webster anchored a strong effort that limited Montevallo's normally potent attack to just two shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Piper Burgess was solid between the posts, making a late save in the second half to keep the match within reach.
The Lady Statesmen continue conference play as they travel to Livingston, Ala., to take on the Tigers of the University of West Alabama Friday afternoon at 5:00 p.m.
