LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The Delta State University women's soccer team fell 1-0 to West Alabama in Gulf South Conference play at the UWA Track and Soccer Complex.
Despite the narrow scoreline, the Lady Statesmen (3-4-4, 2-2-3 GSC) controlled much of the run of play and generated consistent offensive pressure, outshooting the Tigers 14-7 and holding an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore midfielder
Chloe Colquhoun led the attack with four shots, all on target, while
Casey Stalder and
Avery Hooker each added key scoring chances.
Delta State's back line — anchored by
Ava Steven,
Mackenzie Winters, and
Ava Webster — was sharp throughout, allowing few clear looks from open play. Freshman goalkeeper
Piper Burgess turned in another strong performance between the posts, recording three saves and keeping DSU in contention deep into the second half.
The only goal of the match came in the eighth minute when West Alabama's Selis Demirci converted a penalty kick. From there, Delta State took control, applying sustained pressure through the midfield and forcing UWA keeper Yumari Hernandez into seven saves.
The Lady Statesmen earned seven corner kicks and continued to build momentum late, including multiple chances in the final five minutes that just missed the mark.
The Lady Statesmen will head to Huntsville, looking to bounce back against the Chargers from UAH Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
