CLINTON, Miss. — The Delta State University women's soccer team delivered an inspired second-half comeback on Saturday afternoon, taking down in-state rival Mississippi College 2–1 for the first time in program history at Robert P. Longabaugh Field. The victory keeps the Lady Statesmen unbeaten in Gulf South Conference play (now 2-0-3, 3-2-4 overall).
After falling behind early in the second minute, Delta State settled in defensively behind goalkeeper
Piper Burgess, who made three key saves to keep the Lady Statesmen within striking distance. The offense came alive in the second half, peppering the Choctaws' goal with 10 shots after the break and controlling the tempo with crisp passing and relentless pressure.
The equalizer came in the 71st minute from defender
Casey Stalder, who drove home her first goal of the season to level the match. Momentum stayed firmly in Delta State's favor, and in the 84th minute, forward
Millie Congerton netted the game-winner — her third goal of the season — capping off a dominant closing stretch for the Lady Statesmen.
Burgess anchored the defense with a composed performance, while
Mackenzie Winters,
Ava Steven, and
Kennedi Banar helped limit Mississippi College to just two second-half shots. Delta State finished with a commanding 15–5 advantage in shots and 9–4 in shots on goal.
Delta State will return home next week looking to build on its unbeaten conference streak against the Falcons from Montevallo.
