CLEVELAND, Miss. – Senior guard
Kolby Horace played hero for the Delta State University Men's Basketball Team's season opening 60-57 win against the Magicians from LeMoyne-Owen College Friday evening at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
The Mobile Native knocked in a game winning layup with a foul 2.1 seconds left after
Je'Marion Westbrook knocked down two free throws to tie after a flagrant foul.
Horace was the engine for Delta State, pouring in
26 points on 8-of-16 shooting while adding
8 rebounds and a pair of steals to lead all scorers. His relentless play down the stretch helped DSU turn a tight halftime deficit into a multi-possession lead late in the second half.
Delta State's perimeter shooting proved decisive, as the Statesmen knocked down
10 three-pointers, including key makes from
Je'Marion Westbrook,
Bryce Clayton, and
Samuel Whitmer. Westbrook added
11 points, all coming from behind the arc and the free-throw line, while Whitmer chipped in
six points, both from three
Defensively, DSU ratcheted up the pressure in the final 20 minutes, forcing seven turnovers while holding the Magicians to just two fast-break points. The Statesmen also stayed disciplined, committing only
12 fouls in the entire contest – a major factor in a close defensive battle
Elisha Puckett provided additional balance on both ends with
7 points,
6 rebounds, and
2 steals, while the Statesmen bench contributed timely minutes and defensive stops to help preserve the lead
After trailing 23–21 at halftime, Delta State outscored LeMoyne-Owen
39–34 in the second half, showcasing strong ball movement, improved shot selection, and tough rebounding in crucial moments
