CLEVELAND, Miss - The Delta State University men's basketball team remained unbeaten on the young season, turning in a dominant first-half performance to secure a
66–54 victory over Williams Baptist on Monday night inside Walter Sillers Coliseum.
The Statesmen (2–0) exploded for
43 first-half points, using sharp perimeter shooting and relentless rebounding to seize control early. Delta State connected on
eight three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes while holding the Eagles to just 9-of-29 from the floor.
Bryce Clayton led the Statesmen with
15 points, knocking down four threes and anchoring DSU's perimeter attack.
Samuel Whitmer added
12 points, also hitting four three-pointers, while
DaCory Porter contributed a strong two-way showing with
12 points, 5 rebounds, and 8-of-9 shooting at the free-throw line.
Elisha Puckett delivered a standout all-around effort, finishing with
15 rebounds, four offensive boards, and seven points. His presence in the paint helped Delta State secure a
46–43 advantage on the glass, including 15 offensive rebounds.
Defensively, the Statesmen were equally impressive—forcing
17 turnovers and converting them into
19 points while limiting Williams Baptist to 33% shooting from the field. Delta State also recorded five blocked shots, highlighted by three from
Je'Marion Westbrook.
Though the scoring pace slowed in the second half, the Statesmen maintained a steady double-digit advantage throughout much of the contest, closing out the non-conference win in front of 298 fans at Sillers Coliseum.
Delta State returns to action later this week as the Statesmen hit the road to the Bluegrass State to take on the Panthers from Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
