Strong Start Lifts Lady Statesmen to a 63-48 win at AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Delta State University Women's Basketball team (6-3, 4-0 GSC) used a balanced offensive attack and strong defensive effort to secure a 64–48 Gulf South Conference road victory over Auburn University at Montgomery on Sunday afternoon at the AUM Athletics Complex. The win moves the Lady Statesmen to 6-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 in league play.

Delta State set the tone early, opening the game on a 19–7 first-quarter run while forcing multiple turnovers and limiting AUM to just two field goals in the opening 10 minutes. The Lady Statesmen carried a 32–16 advantage into halftime behind efficient shooting and active play on both ends of the floor.

Dakiya Toney led Delta State with 14 points and six rebounds, attacking the paint and converting at the free-throw line. Madi Kate Vuncannon knocked down four three-pointers on her way to 12 points, while Jariyah Williamson added 12 points and four assists. Anna Cera provided a spark off the bench with 11 points, including timely baskets that helped maintain momentum.

Defensively, Delta State forced 19 AUM turnovers and came up with 10 steals, turning those opportunities into consistent scoring chances. Alyse Holliman anchored the interior with three blocks, helping limit second-chance opportunities down the stretch.

AUM made a push in the third quarter, but Delta State answered with key baskets and steady defense to keep control of the game. The Lady Statesmen closed out the contest by outscoring the Warhawks 18–13 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Delta State will return to Walter Sillers Coliseum for the final time in 2025 as they will host the Tigers from the University of West Alabama Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. (CT)
