Statesmen fall to Tigers 67-51

CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University Men's Basketball team battled throughout Thursday night but came up short in Gulf South Conference action, falling 67–51 West Alabama at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

The Statesmen showed resilience early, trading baskets and momentum through much of the opening half. Delta State remained within striking distance at the break, trailing 28–25 after 20 minutes of play.

DaCory Porter led all Delta State scorers with a game-high 21 points, attacking the rim consistently and converting 8-of-10 from the free-throw line. Bryce Clayton and Samuel Whitmer each added 11 points, with Whitmer contributing on both ends of the floor, including multiple blocks and five rebounds.

Defensively, Delta State recorded four blocks and forced key turnovers, highlighted by strong interior defense from Whitmer and Je'Marion Westbrook. The Statesmen continued to compete on the glass, working to create second-chance opportunities against a physical West Alabama lineup.

West Alabama pulled away in the second half behind efficient shooting and transition scoring, but Delta State continued to fight until the final horn, closing the game with contributions from its bench and young rotation.

Delta State moves to 5–5 overall and 2–3 in Gulf South Conference play and will return to action on Saturday as the Statesmen continue GSC competition at Walter Sillers Coliseum against UAH.
