Statesmen Start Conference Play with Union and Christian Brothers

Cleveland, Miss. - The Delta State University Men's Basketball Team (3-2, 0-0 GSC) will begin conference play this week with two home games to open Gulf South Conference play.  


Thursday, the Bulldogs of Union University (3-2, 0-0 GSC) will come to Cleveland for a game at Walter Sillers at approximately 7:30 p.m. Following this game, Christian Brothers University (1-3, 0-0 GSC) will come to Cleveland on Saturday at approximately 4:00 p.m. 


The Voice of the Statesmen Michael Gross will have the call on the Statesmen Sports Network and the Flo College Network.  


Scouting the Statesmen:  

  • Delta State enters this weekend with a 3-2 overall record. Last time out, the Green and White rallied late in the game in the 75-68 win over Ouachita Baptist to bring their home record to 3-0. 

  • Elisha Puckett leads the team in rebounding, averaging 7.2 rebounds per game while Westbrook leads with 12 assists and averages a block per game.  

Scouting the Bulldogs

  • The Bulldogs enter this weekend like the Statesmen with a 3-2 overall record. Union is looking to continue momentum off a 99-90 win against Fisk University on Thanksgiving Eve in Jackson 

  • Union also has four players averaging double-digit points so far this season, with Will Lovings-Watts leading with 19.2 per game. The Bulldogs are shooting 49% from the field, and 35% from beyond the arc. 

  • Terrance Ringo Jr. Leads the Bulldogs in rebounds, averaging 8.8 per game. 


Scouting the Buccaneers

  • Christian Brothers looks to start conference play on a high note. Last time out, the Bucs fell in their home opener to the Reddies from Henderson State University 83-64 last Saturday at Canale Arena. 

  • Marquis Gill leads the Buccaneers while averaging 19 points per game. The Buccaneers are shooting 41% from the field, and 30% from three-point range. 

  • Preseason All-GSC honoree Iman Kheirati leads in all rebounding categories with 43 averaging 10.8 per game.
