CLEVELAND, Miss. — The Delta State University Men's Basketball protected its home floor on Saturday evening at Walter Sillers Coliseum, using a balanced offensive attack and timely defensive stops to secure a
67–64 win over Christian Brothers in Gulf South Conference play.
The Statesmen (4–3, 1–1 GSC) built a 35–29 halftime advantage behind efficient ball movement and strong perimeter shooting, knocking down
eight first-half three-pointers. Senior guard
DaCory Porter set the tone early, orchestrating the offense with poise and finishing the night with
15 points, seven assists, and just one turnover in 35 minutes.
CBU made multiple pushes in the second half behind a 31-point performance from Marquis Gill, but the Statesmen answered each surge with key baskets and disciplined defense. Delta State's interior presence proved vital as
Je'Marion Westbrook delivered a
13-point, 8-rebound effort, highlighted by a pair of strong finishes in the closing minutes.
Sharpshooter
Samuel Whitmer continued to provide spacing, knocking down
four threes on his way to
12 points and seven rebounds, while
Bryce Clayton added
11 points, including three first-half triples that helped DSU seize early momentum.
Delta State finished the night shooting
24-of-63 from the floor and held a 35–37 rebounding margin despite CBU's late push on the offensive glass. The Statesmen also turned 11 Buccaneer turnovers into
13 points, a key separator in a tight contest.
With CBU tying the game at 55–55 inside six minutes remaining, Porter and Westbrook combined on consecutive scoring plays to regain the lead. Strong defensive possessions over the final minute sealed the win, with DSU forcing contested shots on CBU's last two trips.
The Statesmen will hit the road next weekend with a two-game GSC road stretch as they travel to Montevallo, Ala., to take on the Falcons from the University of Montevallo, who beat Trevecca Nazarene 90-60 this afternoon in Nashville. Tipoff Thursday evening will be at approximately 7:30 p.m. (CT).
