OXFORD, Miss. – The Delta State University Softball Team (5-1, 2-0 GSC) clinched a series win with a double header sweep against the Lady Flames of Lee University (7-3, 0-2 GSC) Friday afternoon at MTrade park in Oxford, Miss.
The Lady Statesmen defeated Lee 7-3 in game one and followed it up with a 6-5 back-and-forth win to finish the afternoon.
GAME ONE
The Lady Statesmen scored four runs in the bottom of the third to pull away from the Flames 7-3 in the opening game of the double header.
Freshman
Averi Bridgman threw 3.2 innings in relief, striking out three Lady Flames to earn her first career win in the green and white.
The Lady Statesmen struck first in the bottom of the first starting with a lead off double from
Mattie Granberry. Two batters later,
Bailey Way collected her first RBI of the game as the Kansas native took a 2-1 pitch the other way giving DSU a 1-0 lead.
After the Lady Flames tied the game up at 1-1 in the top of the third, Delta State would explode in the bottom of the third as DSU loaded the bases with no outs.
Avery Ragsdale would drive in Granberry who scored on an errant throw by the pitcher to re-gain the lead at 2-1.
On the next at-bat,
Kyleigh Wheaton drove in
Mary Teague with a sacrifice fly to center field. Following the sacrifice fly, Cataldo would reach on a fielder's choice to make it 4-1. During the next at-bat, DSU would wreak havoc on the base paths with a double steal making it 5-1.
After a Lee run in the top of the sixth, Way would get her second and third RBI with a two-run single to right field.
Way went 3-4 with three RBIs while the Lady Statesmen wreaked havoc on the basepaths with four stolen bags throughout the game.
GAME TWO
Wheaton and Riley Leonard each had three-hit performances at the dish as the Lady Statesmen won a back-and-forth battle with two ties and two lead changes 6-5.
Emma Enderud threw three innings in relief to earn her second win of the season.
After trailing 1-0
Calli McConnell would lay down a suicide squeeze scoring Granberry tying the game up at 1-1.
The Lady Statesmen would respond to a Lady Flame one-run third with a two-run single from Wheaton to grab their first lead of the game at 5-4.
In the next inning,
Abbi Cataldo would score on a wild pitch, scoring an insurance run for DSU making 6-5
The Lady Statesmen and Lady Flames will play the third game tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. (CDT) on Oxford High School's softball field.
